Interview with Allison Martin

When did you first start writing?
I first started writing seriously while taking a course on writing for children. The scenarios that I presented in each of my assignments became increasingly emotional, and overly filled with romance. They were too complex for kid's books. Finally, I gave in to instinct and penned Voice With A Story to Tell ( to describe the emotional upset that was developing within me. Of course I had to add a bit of steamy romance to keep readers reading. Its creation satisfied my urge to write with conviction and solution. I hope it inspires and uplifts all.
What is the greatest joy of writing for you?
The greatest joy in writing is getting to the "solution" scenes. Creating pages of emotional upset with a climatic finish is the most fulfilling feeling. I often have to settle my own emotions after writing a story end.
Talking it out with fans and members of women’s fiction book clubs is the best. I find all too often that I’m not the only one guilty of vesting my feelings into a story.
What do your fans mean to you?
My fans mean everything. For me, it’s like true love. They are my motivation. If my stories can influence one reader with a solution for the better, then I have done my job. I want to uplift the broken, inspire the discouraged, and humor the unhappy. Through my works, I want them to know that they are not alone in their experience and a solution will soon come.
What motivated you to become an indie author?
I have been writing romance for over 20 years. Words, pictures and ideas collide within my imagination continuously. Being a proponent of love and steamy, happy endings, I often set these situations to paper. As you can imagine, I have tons of material.
After years of avoiding the help of vanity presses, I tried unsuccessfully to secure a publishing deal. I started to believe that my material just wasn't marketable. After all, I wasn't able to acquire the interest of a literary agent. Still, the inspiration continued. Writing for me has never stopped. I became obsessed with finding a way to get my stories published. I studied similar books and researched authors that dominated the market.
To my surprise, the nature of the business had drastically changed. The demand for personal electronic devices had soared. Some of my favorite authors had gone the indie route to publish eBooks and experienced great success. Eternal shelf life for their stories had worked for them in incredible ways.
This had definitely appealed to me. I'm hooked! Reaching readers worldwide without limitations is a very exciting prospect. I mean everyone falls in love, so why not read about it in its raw and gritty format. Free from editorial speculation of what trends interest readers best.
Will they want to read scenarios where things don't play out ?
Of course they would. Everyone experiences trials in love. My stories are often hope for a romantic future. Prime examples of getting through emotional ups and downs.
Are they market-worthy? Only time will tell.
As an indie author, skies the limit. I am more than happy to be able to focus on the story that will reach a countless number of readers instead of focusing on a countless number of readers in search of any story.
How has Smashwords contributed to your success?
Smashwords has armed me with a sure-shot way to reach an unrestrained number of readers that are in search of a great story. With an easy-to-use interface, I have access to a broad spectrum of readers without limitation. The publishing of my works has truly been an easy process.
