Interview with Ari Meier

When did you first start writing?
I started writing at the age of 16. It was a horror story inspired by "The Shining".
What's the story behind your latest book?
I've always attracted people to tell me about their relationship stories and issues. After many years and two marriages, I was inspired to share my personal relationship stories. It was time for women to see the BS behind the whole playa mentality and myth; that it's NOT what it's portrayed as. This book is part autobiography and erotica written using essays and poetry, with stories ranging from my own relationship stories to my interviewing women cheaters, all while sneaking in the message that so-called playas are mostly living a big lie and they're mostly insecure guys desiring real love.
What motivated you to become an indie author?
It was natural progression to becoming an indie author, being that I've been an indie musician and artist for much of my life. I'm a very DIY person who doesn't like to wait on an 'approval' from anyone other than the marketplace; and so far the marketplace has given me a thumbs up! It's very liberating to know that I have complete control over my creations and affect my bottom line.
What is the greatest joy of writing for you?
Releasing thoughts, sharing ideas and seeing how that affect others.
What do your fans mean to you?
I appreciate each and everyone of my fans. If I can help or get through to just one person in a positive way, then that is a greater joy than how much money I've made. Fans rock!
What are you working on next?
My next project will be a general self help, relationship book, possibly with my wife. I'm also putting together a new band doing experimental pop music (think Bjork, Radiohead, Deerhoof, TV on the Radio) and I'm coming out with a new series of paintings later this year.
Who are your favorite authors?
Stephen King, Violette Meier, Tananarive Due, Pearl Cleage, bell hooks
When you're not writing, how do you spend your time?
Composing music, painting, social media marketing.
How do you discover the ebooks you read?
Goodreads has been my biggest source of discovery, although a new ebook platform, Oyster, will probably be my newest joy once it's up and running.
Do you remember the first story you ever wrote?
Yes, it was called 'Terror on The 17th Floor'. It was story that I wrote at the age of 16 and was set in a skyscraper, but inspired by 'The Shining'.
What is your writing process?
I'm not complicated. I just write and research (if necessary) and write some more. I almost always have music blasting in my ear and may interrupt my writing with creating songs on my keyboard and painting. This can happen throughout the writing. While writing this book, I created over 75 songs and was in two bands. For me, music and art go hand in hand with the writing.
