Interview with John Ruch

When you're not writing, how do you spend your time?
Telling other people's stories as a journalist, and living other people's stories through the modern magic of video games, especially those with player-created content.
What's the story behind your latest book?
Years of playing "Dungeons & Dragons" and similar role-playing games left me with a slew of characters I didn't want to let go of. I read some modern fantasy novels whose passion inspired me to join the club; and some others, of the polite and quaint type, that made me eager to unleash my rowdy imaginary friends. My own life, and thus my influences, changed significantly during the years of writing, but those roots continued feeding "Arrowmask: Godkillers of the Shrouded Vast."
Do you remember the first story you ever wrote?
Yes. I just hope no one else does.
Describe your desk
Controlled chaos of notebooks, pens, and such flotsam as business cards from the Official Monster Raving Loony Party and a great swordfighter named Amy the Bad Ass Valkyrie.
What do you read for pleasure?
I'm an eclectic reader. My reading list over the past year has included the historian Barbara Tuchman; John le Carre; Joseph Mitchell; urban planner Ryan Gravel; and Jill Lepore's "Secret History of Wonder Woman."
What are you working on next?
The sequel to "Godkillers of the Shrouded Vast" is well underway.
