Interview with Kelly Croasmun

What are your five favorite books, and why?
The Glass Castle by Jeanette Walls: I am in love with this book! The characters are so vivid as you read. You laugh and cry right along with them which makes for an excellent read. I love stories about people overcoming great odds, and this book definitely delivers in that department.

White Oleander by Janet Fitch: I'll admit it, I saw the movie first and fell in love with the story. The book shows a deeper, much darker tale that they didn't completely capture on screen. The MC overcomes a great deal without feeling sorry for herself. She has such a twisted relationship with her mother! This is a book that you can't put down.

Gone With the Wind by Margarget Mitchell: I find myself reading and re-reading this book. It is indeed one of my favorites and is a classic for a reason. Rhett Butler is a favorite character of mine for his snark and his great love of Scarlett, and Scarlett is a favorite character of mine for her tenacity.

Every book by Cassandra Clare: Can I say that? It may be cheating but I love her YA books. The characters are likeable, the world-building is fantastic and her male protagonists make for some dreamy book boyfriends. :)

Outlander by Diana Gabaldon: Though I do enjoy all of Diana's books, the original in the series is my favorite. I love that Claire Randall is a strong female character. She is smart and capable, though her mouth sometimes gets her into trouble. James Fraser...what can I say? They don't call him the King of Men for nothing! The deep undying love that he shows Claire (and she eventually shares for him) is completely swoonworthy. The research Diana did for her book series is astounding, and you also learn a great deal about Scottish history, herbs and common practices of the time period. I can't recommend this book enough! (The show is pretty amazing too, I might add.)
What do you read for pleasure?
I'm never without a book! LOL I read a lot of YA books, and am a sucker for a good romance. I do enjoy a good memoir, especially when the MC overcomes horrible odds to find peace. Because I have several hobbies, (soapmaking, jewelry, quilting, costuming, baking) I also read a lot of crafting books and cookbooks as well.
Who are your favorite authors?
Diana Gabaldon, Margaret Mitchell, W. Somerset Maugham, Cassandra Clare, Becca Fitzpatrick, Jessica Shirvington, Jolene Perry and many, many more!
What's the story behind your latest book?
You know that old saying "If you don't see the book on the shelf that you want to read, you must write it"? That's what I did. I wanted a MC that has odds stacked against her, a love interest that isn't necessarily Prince Charming and a light read that would keep me interested throughout. I can't wait to continue Hailey and Devin's story, as it turns much darker and the stakes are even higher.
What are you working on next?
My latest project is a dark romantic comedy. I'm in love with these two characters and I can't wait to share their story with you!

I'm also in the process of plotting the sequel to Crazy Deadly Beautiful Love. The next installment will see even more danger and even darker figures to contend with. Can Hailey and Devin's love survive? Can Hailey keep Wren safe from forces working against her? It's going to be a dark, delicious read and I can't wait to get started on it.
Favorite book boyfriends?
Patch from Hush, Hush. James Alexander Malcolm McKenzie Fraser from Outlander. Will Herondale from Cassie Clare series. Jace from Mortal Instrument Series. Just to name a few... :)
Favorite hobbies when you're not writing?
I enjoy artisan soapmaking, (soapmaker since 2002!) as well as creating bath & body products like lotions and bath fizzies. I am studying costuming at my leisure, and have several vintage patterns that are waiting to be sewn into garments by me. I'm fond of jewelry making and also love working with polymer clay to create charms. I am currently working on a modern quilt in my not-so-spare time. I also enjoy creating art with mixed media or watercolor pencils. I'm also a shameless Outlander fangirl. (Books and show!)
What inspires you to get out of bed each day?
For my day job, I work in a field that helps others. Service to others inspires me and makes me look forward to going to work. I look forward to the daily interactions with the people that I love, as well as meeting new people too. I'm especially excited about writing in general, and crafting stories about characters who are dear to me. It's wonderful to share these characters with others! I hope that readers will enjoy the characters as much as I do writing them.
