Interview with M. Clarke

What book marketing techniques have been most effective for you?
One of the marketing techniques that have been most effective is giving free books away. If the readers like the first book, then they will purchase the second and so on. Another is word of mouth.
When did you first start writing?
I first started writing about six years ago when my grandmother passed away. It was a way for me to heal the loss of her. I never knew I would enjoy it this much. I used to be a kindergarten teacher. I stopped teaching after a couple of years and took writing full-time.
Describe your desk
I have too much stuff on my desk LOL. So I write on the sofa, table, and sometimes I sit on the carpet and use the sofa for back support.
What motivated you to become an indie author?
I never wanted to be an author, so when I first finished my novel, I didn't search for an agent. I thought I would write one book, publish it, and that would be it. But I was so wrong. Although I'm a hybrid author now, I enjoy publishing my own books. I like the flexibility and the control.
How has Smashwords contributed to your success?
Yes. Smashwords has helped me reach readers beyond Amazon and more internationally.
What is the greatest joy of writing for you?
The greatest joy of writing is that I get to tell a story I created. To finish from beginning to end is also an accomplishment. You either have the passion or you don't. Writing should be fun and exciting.
What do your fans mean to you?
My fans are everything to me. I write for them. Most of them have become my friends. I also do giveaways to let them know how much I appreciate them. I wish we could have one big party.
Who are your favorite authors?
I have too many. Recently I've listened to an audiobook by Sarah J. Maas.
