Interview with D. A. Featherling

Do you remember the first story you ever wrote?
I do. It was a story about a little boy angel...named Homer. Red-haired, freckle-faced and...bored! I planned a series about Homer and his adventures...I was going to call it the Heavenly Daze series.

I still like the idea so I may re-visit it sometime and publish it. Just not sure if it's for kids...or adults!
What is your writing process?
The first thing I have to have is the idea. The "what if?" of a situation or person's actions/reactions. Once I sort of have that, then I MUST have my title. Can't even begin without that (don't ask me why!). I have a pretty good idea of the beginning and ending...the middle evolves as I start to write. Sometimes in the middle of the story I start to plot a bit, but a whole lot of it is seeing where the characters go and what they do and adjusting accordingly.
What book marketing techniques have been most effective for you?
Still working on that since I'm a fairly new author. I have a feeling Smashwords will be effective once I
get all my books on it. I have had some success with talks and book signings, but I think e-books are more likely to be number one as time goes by.
What do you read for pleasure?
My favorite books to read for my own pleasure are mystery and suspense. Maybe that's why I like to write them. I also enjoy many of the military thrillers and action/adventure stories.
Describe your desk
One cluttered mess! BUT...I know what's there and (sort of) what's on it. I have bits and pieces of paper with notes scribbled on it of things to do, important notes, etc. I need to be able to find., a copy stand to hold whatever I'm correcting after editing. My monitor, of course, and my little hard drive. A telephone and speakers and my favorite "author thing"...an old Victorian pen-holder with a plume-y white, quill pen stuck in it.
Where did you grow up, and how did this influence your writing?
I grew up in several Texas towns -- primarily Austin, Texas, and lived there until young adulthood. Did some traveling to various parts of the country then, but eventually came back to Central Texas where my family lives. I feel very blessed that I was able to see many phases of Austin as it grew and changed, but when I was a child, it was almost a "Leave It to Beaver" world...kids still used their imaginations to play and it all became grist for the mental mill.
When did you first start writing?
I've probably written SOMEthing most of my life. Worked on high school/college newspapers, wrote poetry (as almost everyone does at some point), but actually began writing novels about 12-14 years ago. Life intervened, as they say, so have only seriously been pursuing publication for the six months or so. Of course, I have a backlog of seven books already written, so I am somewhat ahead of the game.
What is the greatest joy of writing for you?
My motivation for writing initially...and it hasn't changed...is to produce something in the written word that will enable my readers to escape for a time into a different scene where they can enjoy someone else's life and adventures. If, after finishing the book, they close that back cover and are smiling, then I've done a good thing. That thought brings me great joy since reading has been such a wonderful treasure for me over the years.
What do your fans mean to you?
Fans are the greatest blessing...the icing on the cake. Not only do I get to write books...but I get to share them with people who will enjoy and appreciate them. I am always so humbled when someone shares how a particular book has touched them or enhanced their life in some way. It's a joy hard to compare to anything else.
What are you working on next?
I'm still editing and (as needed) re-writing the rest of those initial seven novels, trying to write second books in series, and I just started a new series as well.

I plan to write Book 2 in the "It's Murder at the Office" series next. Got the plot, got the title, I'm ready to go!
