Interview with GA Hauser

Published 2016-03-06.
How do you approach cover design?
I use a mixture of cover designs for my work, but I love original photographs from spectacularly talented photographers, I try to keep the images simple, with just the title and my name, to allow my fans to enjoy the art, instead of using overlays and too many stock photos.
Do you remember the first story you ever read, and the impact it had on you?
I read J.R.R. Tolkien's trilogy so many times over, I was hooked on it. Before becoming a writer, I was an avid reader.
When did you first start writing?
I began writing nearly twenty years ago. I was looking for gay fiction, and at the time, there was a huge gap in the market between porn and nothing at all. So, I began creating my own stories, I never imagined would be published.
What motivated you to become an indie author?
I had a few very bad experiences with publishers. Needless to say, being able to produce, and control everything from edits, to cover designs, to release dates, is very important to me. In life, it's all about balance. Being independent worked for me, so I continue to do it on my own.
How has Smashwords contributed to your success?
Smashwords is one of the few book distributors that do not ban, censor, or block books about gay men. Sadly, too many others have strict 'guidelines' which limit romances. Smashwords isn't one of them.
What is the greatest joy of writing for you?
Passion. I love to live in my fantasy world, and believe in happy endings, (no pun intended) but my greatest joy is seeing the reactions of fans who love what I write. Sharing my characters, my belief in love no matter the gender, and hopefully showing the world, love is love, and there shouldn't be limits or boundaries on that love.
What do your fans mean to you?
Everything. Without them, I would be lost. They are my inspiration to continue to improve my craft and give them something of value and never a predictable formulated plot.
What inspires you to get out of bed each day?
My work. My books. They inspire me to continue to challenge myself, to keep up with the social trends, the news, and the world.
Do you remember the first story you ever wrote?
Yes, it was a trilogy about Mark Richfield, Jack Larsen, and Sharon Tice. Those books were never published, but the main characters became my focal point for my Action! Series, and all the prequels and satellite books around them.
What is your writing process?
My novels are character driven. They tell ME what to write!
