Interview with Lp Johnson

Where did you grow up, and how did this influence your writing?
I was raised in Chicago, Illinois. My writing influences were many; beginning with my parents, who were strong advocates of good reading skills and proper grammar. By eighth-grade I'd had many wonderful teachers who encouraged my growing talent. My eighth-grade teacher in particular was one of my most vocal promoters, pushing me to do the best that I was able to build upon that talent and challenge myself to grow better in every area.
When did you first start writing?
My first poem was in third grade, and won a small contest being held in school.
What's the story behind your latest book?
'Walking In The Light" is a collection of inspirational and scriptural studies I've written over the years.
What motivated you to become an indie author?
After many years of seeking out traditional publishers for my first book, "Nubian Sun", and finding the processes tedious at best, I actually set it aside and merely concentrated on my writing for a long time. When I became aware of the new 'self-publish' houses growing online it sparked an interest in learning whether it was possible to go that route, yet my research into what are now called 'vanity' publishers did not produce what I thought to be viable or trust-worthy means -not to mention I found the upfront costs somewhat daunting. In 2012, I at last came across a blog discussing the up-and-coming trend among some authors to go it alone via what was becoming a truly simpler means -online Ebook publishing, and by extension, Print-on-demand. Now, in merely one year I have been able to publish all four of the books that have been waiting for release.
How has Smashwords contributed to your success?
The one thing I've found best about Smashwords is their vetting process. The style-guide makes it possible to truly arrange manuscripts in a manner that presents a professional and clean look that is attractive in every Reading device. Of course, the fact that by uploading once one is able to reach readers in so many online retailers is the icing on the cake.
What is the greatest joy of writing for you?
Ah...the classic question. My writing is primarily in the fiction genre, so my greatest pleasure is in giving voice to the characters, watching them develop and come to 'life' in words, seeing the scenes unfold -and sometimes wondering myself what will happen next -particularly in the series books.
What do your fans mean to you?
It's said that the writer writes for him/herself -but if there is no one reading those words a book is merely a placeholder on the shelf! Never has this been more clear to me than since my first book was released. The reactions of those who were first to begin the Journey through The Land Of Nubia was an absolute joy to me, and as my fan base continues to grow I find myself growing more encouraged to continue writing with the hopes of meeting their expectations.
