Interview with Avril Herbert

Can you tell me a little about yourself?
I was born in England and moved over to America at the age of 25. I have always been a huge animal lover and I started horse riding at the age of 4. In 2014 I rescued a Thoroughbred mare who was off the track and I named her Lady, she was 900lbs when I brought her home, and to watch her turn around has been amazing. I have a small sixth sense, I’m not psychic but I can see, sense and feel different spirits and energies, I like to call it "I am very spiritually connected". I am huge believer in meditation I love just letting my spirit and guides just guide me, I love the possibilities that come with exploring beyond the surface and unearthing something hidden deep within myself the universe as a whole invigorates me. I love the outdoors but when I’m not horse riding, with my animals or meditating if you give me a beach, a sunset, a pen and piece of paper I’m happy. I think deep down there is a small hippy girl in me.
Do you remember the first story you ever read, and the impact it had on you?
The first story I ever read was Black Beauty by Anna Sewell, as a young child I fell in love with story, every night I had to read it I think my mum lost count how many times I read the book. The book really teaches us to treat animals with kindness and respect. As a child I was always watching the Show Jumping and Dressage on the television and the book really helped my passion for the animal not just the sport grow and then once the TV series and movie came out of course I had to watch them. To this day I still love the book it has to be my all time favorite.
What book marketing techniques have been most effective for you?
Social media for me has to be the most effective I love how you can add a hash tag and reach thousands of people. Facebook has been great I have had friends show their support by sharing but just by someone hitting the like button your audience grows. Even when I look at different websites for advertising I always look up their social media accounts first because that is where people will see it first.
What future projects are you currently working on right now?
I am working on loads right now and I am really excited about it all. I have just got my my new blog up and running, I am putting together my second book which is going to be more for children and young adults which is a selection of shorter horse stories and my horse is showing great Dressage potential, so I am learning Dressage I have said in the past how I would love to tell Lady’s story and now I’m thinking about how I can tell it in a completely different way through music and choreography, it’s a lot to learn but I am really excited.
Could you describe to us your typical writing day?
A typical writing day for me is a full work day a good eight hours plus, I put the phone and iPad down and switch off the TV. I may listen to music every now and then but no outside distractions and then I sit down with a pen and paper or my laptop and write. If I need a break half way through the day or if I’m finding it hard to stay focused then I will go out somewhere to get some fresh air most of the time I will take my dog for a hike and come back a couple of hours later or sometimes I may just color sometimes coloring in helps me stay calm and clears my mind and I find that once I have taken a small break I am more focused.
Where do you find your inspiration?
I believe inspiration can come into your life at anytime in any place. When I found my dog Rufus and saw how everyone is so friendly to him I learnt just how Rusty was judged and how people treated him so differently because of his breeds and that really inspired me to see the world through his eyes and tell his story, I do also get inspiration during meditation. I believe if you allow love and your passions into your life inspiration will follow, you just have to do what you love.
Where can your fans find you?
Fans can find me through my blog www.lifestyleofanequestrian.com there they will be able to find all my social media accounts and links for all my work.
What do your fans mean to you?
My fans mean everything to me without them I could not do what I love write and tell stories and I have some who are following me and supporting me not just as an author but also as a equestrian and are really excited to watch how Lady and I grow together, which is just so sweet and amazing. I feel blessed to have amazing fans they mean the world to me.
When did you first start writing?
I first started writing as a young child, my mum tells me how I would always make and write her stories, I am sure she has kept most of them. I have always continued to write, I have kept diaries and journals and I would write short stories but never do anything with them and then I was blessed with my eBook.
What are your thoughts on eBooks, Love them or Hate them?
I get asked this question a lot and my answer is the same, I love eBooks don’t get me wrong I still like to sometimes pick up a book and read but I love the opportunities that eBooks give it allows writers to be able to self publish which means more and more writers get to do what they love and have people read their work.
