Interview with Marie Harper

When did you first start writing?
I started writing as a child. Stories that grew from my dreams usually compelled me to write them down. It was then I started carrying small notebooks. I grew out of the habit once others opinions became a driving force in my life during my teens and early twenties. Once I learned who I was, I picked up my old habit and it felt like welcoming an old friend. It amazed me how many ideas were hiding just waiting to be shared. I love writing and celebrating my imagination.
What's the story behind your latest book?
Trust is a continuation of my series All It Takes Is...series. It is Kylie Thomas' tale. She is a strong woman with many insecurities namely about her desirability and commitment. She falls for a complicated man with an even more complicated past. It was because of relationship with Ryan O'Connell that I was able to write about a unique and intriguing topic - the Russian Mafia or Bratva. There are secrets, there is danger, and of course romance.
What motivated you to become an indie author?
As I stated earlier, I always wanted to be an author yet I didn't know where to start in regards to finding a publisher, shopping a book, getting an agent. In fact, the thought still makes my head spin. I happened upon indie publishing with the urging of another indie author. Though I have to say, the whole marketing component of publishing has vexed me, I still love the sense of accomplishment I have gained through publishing my works independently.
How has Smashwords contributed to your success?
Allowing me to publish my work as well as offering guidance through the Smashwords website has been very helpful.
What is the greatest joy of writing for you?
Besides seeing my growing list of publications, I'd have to say that sharing my work with others has been the most rewarding part of writing. Hearing from readers and reading reviews - when they are posted - helps me understand my successes and areas in need of tweaking.
What are you working on next?
I have a novella ready to start the edit/revision process and have a 4th edition in the All It Takes Is...Series. This time I am going to have a male main character - Wayne. I am really looking forward to getting started. It should be both challenging and fun.
Who are your favorite authors?
Oh favorite authors run the gamut. I love Harper Lee. To Kill A Mockingbird is my all-time favorite novel - gritty, real-life issues, amazing crispness to her prose. Amazing! I also enjoy James Rollins, Sylvia Day, and Kathleen Brooks to name a few.
What inspires you to get out of bed each day?
My kids force me out of bed daily. They are rammy, energetic boys who eat constantly, compete ridiculously over everything, and live fully every moment. Sometimes, I wonder what they are thinking - both literally and figuratively. With their zest for life, I find it hard to hibernate.
When you're not writing, how do you spend your time?
When not writing, I am working, mothering, and shuttling kids from one activity to another. Hence why writing is my refuge.
How do you discover the ebooks you read?
Most ebooks I chose are from a familiar artist. I also take recommendations from my friends as well as just browsing through publicized categories on various websites.
Do you remember the first story you ever wrote?
The first story I ever wrote was inspired by a dream I had about a princess named Amelia who was attending her first ball. My dream was so vivid that as soon as I awoke i jotted down my memories. In that moment, I got the writing bug and had it ever since.
Do you remember the first story you ever read, and the impact it had on you?
As a kid, I was not an avid reader. Hard to believe that an author did not enjoy reading but I didn't. Nothing really grabbed or held onto my attention for long until I read To Kill a Mockingbird by Harper Lee. My high school English teacher assigned this book, and after groaning as most teens would, I discovered a story with complex characters dealing with difficult conditions. Atticus, Jem, Boo, and Scout stayed with me long after my assignment ended. In fact, my pen name is inspired by this amazing, life-changing read and Nobel prize winning author.
How do you approach cover design?
I try to find a picture that closely matches the characters in my novel or emotion I want to portray. I know most clipart sites tell you not to worry about matching image to character exactly, but I really try to give my readers a visual before the begin to read. I think it helps them connect with the characters more easily.
