I search the subject matter. I love horror and crime books. I'm also an avid reader of biographies so a topic search usually unearths something, often by an undiscovered writer.
When you're not writing, how do you spend your time?
I work full time, I regularly use the gym and I'm doing research and writing book two in the series, so I'm kept pretty busy. In-between I have to fit in friends family and holidays. It's a hard life.
Do you remember the first story you ever wrote?
Yes. It was a short story about someone who died and came back to life with a 'passenger' from another realm. It was basically a short (and not too great) ghost story.
What is your writing process?
Some research and a lot of stream of consciousness. I usually have a start and end point, and some notes reminding me what to include. Most of it just comes as I write and often gets changed or moved around. Like a lot of authors I steal events from other peoples lives and ideas from their conversations.
Do you remember the first story you ever read, and the impact it had on you?
Hmmmm. No I don't remember that. As a child I always had a book in my hand and that continued into adulthood. James Herbert and Stephen King made an impression. I remember the first books of theirs that I read they were The Rats and Carrie. I was always an avid fan of Horror.
How do you approach cover design?
I have a very good friend who is a graphic designer. I give some ideas and he does the rest. The Addicted to Murder cover was the 5th version and I loved it as soon as I saw it.
What do you read for pleasure?
Biographies and books about real life serial killers. I find the machinations behind their crimes fascinating. The more outlandish their crimes and the more incomprehensible their modus-operandi the more fascinated I become. Jeffery Dahmer and Fred and Rose west were particularly insane - their crimes are unimaginably sick. It makes great reading and great reserach material.
What is your e-reading device of choice?
Kindle or Kobo I have both on my tablet.
What book marketing techniques have been most effective for you?
I'm pretty new to marketing so I'm trying facebook and twitter right now.
Describe your desk
Haha office? it's a table in my kitchen. I have a one bed flat in London.
Where did you grow up, and how did this influence your writing?
I grew up in Northumberland in the UK. It's the country that borders Scotland. My first book begins there - write about what you know. It's not the most exciting place to grow up so an imagination was necessary.
Some people have commented on the graphic detail in your book
Well, it's about a serial killer and they don't cuddle people to death. I imagine myself in the situation and think, what would an unhinged sociopath do next? I think it's important to recall the deaths detail. That's what drives him on, it's the source of his pleasure. He took great pleasure in killing so therefore it figures that he would take great pleasure in recounting his crimes.
