Interview with Barnaby Wilde

When did you first start writing?
I guess I started writing as soon as I started school. One of my earliest memories is of my father typing one fingered on an old Remington typewriter to create a miniature book from a story I'd just written (long lost, sadly). I've written since then, but only began publishing a few years back.
What's the story behind your latest book?
I've been creating a series of detective stories featuring motorcycle riding Mercedes Drew and her boyfriend Detective Inspector Des Flowers. To date there are nine stories, contained in three volumes plus a new full length story in volume four. These are light hearted stories, more in the Miss Marple mould than Mike Hammer and include robbery, arson, an octogenarian post office raid, kidnap, counterfeiting, vegetable theft, extortion and more. The first three volumes are also available in a collected edition, which includes a preview of volume four, Smile for the Camera, a full length Mercedes Drew mystery.
How has Smashwords contributed to your success?
I had long wanted to publish some of my writing but was confounded by the difficulties of getting published in the traditional print publishing world. Buying a Kindle and finding how simple it was to download and read e-books opened my eyes to the world of online e-publishing. I found Smashwords by reading one of Mark Coker's publishing guides and discovered how straightforward it was to publish and get distributed to major online suppliers.
What do your fans mean to you?
I enjoy the writing process, but the real pleasure is to know that someone has enjoyed reading what I've written. To be honest, getting some positive feedback from a satisfied reader is worth more than being paid for it.
What are you working on next?
I am planning the next Tom Fletcher adventure, which will be available before the end of the year, I hope. I am also collecting more short stories for inclusion in the next (9th) volume of Barnaby's Shorts. These are coffee break sized stories in a wide variety of genres.
Who are your favorite authors?
Kurt Vonnegut. I like the humour and the understated philosophy.
What inspires you to get out of bed each day?
Hunger and a full bladder.
How do you discover the ebooks you read?
I tend to look at books that have many positive reviews, which is why I beg readers to leave reviews. It helps other readers discover the books and it helps the author to know what his/her fans like.
What is your e-reading device of choice?
I love my Kindle. I take my library with me everywhere.
What book marketing techniques have been most effective for you?
The most effective thing by far is to receive good reviews from readers, but I also have my own website, post messages on Twitter and in my blog.
How do you approach cover design?
I have four strands to my writing (quirky poems, short stories, Mercedes Drew detective stories and Tom Fletcher humour). I try to establish a distinct and consistent style for each strand. Finding suitable pictures is probably the most difficult part of the process. After that I have some good software which allows me to manipulate text and graphics easily.
