Interview with MariAlice Lehmann

Where did you grow up, and how did this influence your writing?
I grew up in the small town of Brick, New Jersey. It definitely had a huge impact on my writing. There has been so much happening in my town since I was little. When I was little, i did not realize how cruel the world was. But as I got older I realized everything that was going on. All the different people i have met helps me create characters for my writing. All the different situations i have experienced or heard about help me come up with something to write about. Brick may be small, but it definitely is not a quiet town.
When did you first start writing?
I started writing when I was fourteen. Writing always sparked an interest in me, but i was never able to come up with something to create until about seventh grade.
What's the story behind your latest book?
The story behind my latest book. Well, just last year, I lost my grandma to cancer. She was my biggest inspiration throughout my whole life. After loosing her, I started spiraling down. My therapist told me to find something i enjoy doing that can help me cope with her lose. So, i decided to write a book about losing someone with cancer. Everything in the book is based on actual happenings and some made up.
What is the greatest joy of writing for you?
The greatest joy of writing would be having people read my creations. I love the fact that something i love to do can bring enjoyment to others. Another joy would be that i love connecting with my readers. I am young and most of my readers are my age. I find that they can connect really well with my riding. And of course the greatest joy would be being able to work my imagination.
Who are your favorite authors?
My top two favorite authors are Nicholas Sparks and Ellen Hopkins.
When you're not writing, how do you spend your time?
When i am not reading, i am usually reading, creating rainbow loom bracelets, or thinking of what i can write next.
Do you remember the first story you ever wrote?
The first story i ever wrote was a fan fiction. It was about Jesse McCartney having a little sister. The whole story was based on this little sister. I remember her falling in love with Drew Roy, who i made play the role of Jesse's best friend. She also dated Justin Bieber, which, somehow, played the role of Jesse's enemy.
What is your writing process?
My writing process? Well, I just kind of think of what i am writing about, put on music that fits the mood of the story, and just write. Music is definitely a huge influence on my writing.
What are your five favorite books, and why?
1.The Last Song- I loved the way it was written. The whole story line about a girl who pushed away her father but is able to rekindle the relationship is so powerful to me. I remember sitting up for hours reading that book thinking "No, i don't care if you're tired, just read one more page."
2. Hunger Games- I love love love that series. The creativity and the love triangle behind the whole war is amazing.
3. Twilight- I hated the movies, but the books were amazing. I always felt compelled to continue reading, it was like Edward was telling me to read(;
4. Speak- I read that book when I was in eigth grade. Definitely a powerful book.
5. 50 shades of grey- Now, i know that is random. But the series was actually really interesting. I only read it because my friends were, and i was instantly hooked,
