Interview with Benita Cunha Schontag

What motivated you to become an indie author?
I love to write about different characteristics in people, their weaknesses, strengths and desires. In my three stories these traits are brought to light in the main characters.
What is the greatest joy of writing for you?
I like to write endings that surprise, shock or amuse people.
What do your fans mean to you?
If I love my story and am satisfied with it, I want to share it with others. Knowing that someone has enjoyed my stories makes me happy.
What are you working on next?
I recently completed two flash fiction stories: "Play It Again, Samantha" (which won an Honorary Mention in the Soul-Making Keats Literary Competition) and "Alice Nobody." They have not been published yet.
Who are your favorite authors?
I have so many favorite authors. Those who quickly come to mind are Carlos Castaneda, Dan Brown, and Marianne Williamson.
What inspires you to get out of bed each day?
My hobbies: Over a long period of time they included writing, painting and beading necklaces and bracelets.
Do you remember the first story you ever wrote?
Yes. It was "Halloween Schemes."
What is your writing process?
I give a lot of thought and planning to a story first. If I am enthusiastic about it, I will start writing notes in a free-form style.
How do you approach cover design?
I like to draw the reader to an image that relates to my stories, as I did on my first cover here, and I hired a professional designer.
Where did you grow up, and how did this influence your writing?
Oakland, California, which is a multi-cultural and vibrant city.
When did you first start writing?
The year 2000.
