Interview with Robin Sutera

Describe your desk
Well, it's actually a trestle table with a tablecloth on top. On it are my laptop, a full-size keyboard, a 21" monitor, and my printer. That's my workspace. But more importantly, just to my right, is a huge panoramic window from which I can see, from my 18th floor eyrie, both the mountains and the sea. That's what I need to be able to write!
When did you first start writing?
Only last year! I've always wanted to write, but had no idea how to start. Pippa was away on business for a few weeks, so I just sat down at my desk and started.
What inspires you to get out of bed each day?
That's easy - the sun comes up at 6am every day. I wake with the dawn and enjoy my fabulous view of the mountains and the sea. Then I hit the trails and run for an hour. Then breakfast in a chinese coffee shop - the best part of the day!
When you're not writing, how do you spend your time?
Diving on beautiful coral reefs, running on stunning mountain trails, and eating and drinking with friends.
How do you discover the ebooks you read?
Use the filters in Smashwords to search for subjects. Otherwise I buy from Watersones, Sony Store or Amazon by searching for my favourite authors.
Do you remember the first story you ever wrote?
I think it really was 'The Accidental Swingers'!
What is your writing process?
I come up with the concept for the next chapter. Then it sort of unfolds in my mind while I'm running. Then I come home and write it down. The only difficult bit is the physical act of writing, since I'm a one finger hunt 'n peck typist!
Do you remember the first story you ever read, and the impact it had on you?
The first book I ever read myself, aged about 8, was The Adventures of King Arthur and the Knights of the Round Table. Until then my mother always read to me. It was a revelation! I then didn't stop reading 24/7 for years - right through my childhood.
How do you approach cover design?
I admit my design skllls are nil! I go to www.ccrbookcoverdesign.com and ask designers to submit ideas along the themes that I specify. When I find one I like, I ask the designer to modify where necessary - then I buy it!
What do you read for pleasure?
I read anything that crosses my path, generally. But if asked to choose a book from a list, I generally end up with historical fiction.
What is your e-reading device of choice?
Sony eReader. I'm on my 4th or 5th model. I've used them since they first came out and love them. Travelling as we do, ebooks are the only solution for us.
