Interview with Bella Johnson

Published 2014-06-24.
When you're not writing, how do you spend your time?
I have two kids, four dogs, two horses, two cows and five chickens. All of which require a lot of daily attention! I try to balance everything the best I can and have my note book ready if I think of a good idea for a new novel or new plot point I need to work into the projects I'm currently writing.
Do you remember the first story you ever wrote?
It was the first book in "The Kara Heart Series" now referred to as "Heart of Hunters", it was the first novel I ever started, the first series I ever began and contains my favourite Characters to date. I started that series at the age of thirteen, though very different now in the ways of plot and it's content rating, Kara and James are still there!
What is your writing process?
New books generally start like this...
Idea usually formed while doing a mindless tasks.
My brain forms certain scenes, one's I will generally use to deliver my main plots.
I begin to form a loose plot in my mind from those scenes.
Then I sit down and write a draft plot line.
Write out another plot line as I develop ideas.
Chapter outline to keep my reader's attention and plots flowing.
And then... start to write.
How do you approach cover design?
Being I was an art kid, writing and drawing in school were my thing. Some book covers are easy for me to create. The concept is easy and sometimes, they are not. I did Snow Kissed's cover in one day. Heart Of Hunter's Beloved took me over six months to concept and create. Just recently did I finish the paperback cover. Since I'm into graphic design, photography and photoshop, I do all my own covers. I like the control and freedom of the book appearing the way I would like to my readers.
What do you read for pleasure?
I read books nothing like I write really. Alot of it I will read if my friends recommend. Though I do write light erotic books, I tend to read more raunchy stuff though or even stuff that has no romance at all. I pull from all these types of books to create my own worlds and plots.
What is your e-reading device of choice?
I have both Kindle and iBooks and use both those platforms.
What book marketing techniques have been most effective for you?
My website and newsletter!! I LOVE my newsletter, it's amazing to be able to connect with readers and keep interacting with them. A lot then come over to my facebook page www.facebook.com/bellajohnsonauthor to chat and discuss my newsletters!
Describe your desk
A Macbook Pro, an external keyboard for writing on, two speakers for music, a low light lap from ikea and a jar of sharpie markers. Oh and usually a can of diet pepsi.
Where did you grow up, and how did this influence your writing?
I grew up in Vancouver, BC.

It hasn't really influenced my writing other than my new novellas "Snow Kissed" and "Little Kisses" as they are technically set in a place like Vancouver and BC Interior.

Otherwise, my mind is generally in different places, I research europe a ton and learn about things when I need to apply them in my novels. Heart of Hunters is set in England in the Peak District/ Derbyshire. A lot of readers think London but James Dray was technically raised in Derbyshire in my created estate "Blackwell Manor" so yeah, I've had to learn a lot about how they work and do things to help that series along!

My next book I am planning to start at some point, I want to have a base or feel of Norway.
When did you first start writing?
I remember writing books from age seven.
I didn't start and finish a novel till I was thirteen though.
What's the story behind your latest book?
My latest book or "series" is my novellas. Thought the first book is only a novella.
It's Snow Kissed and Little Kisses (sequel).
Story... started it on a whim and didn't mean to end up with a HUGE sequel and fan base for it.
I just wanted to do something fun for the Christmas season and ended up in love with two really cool characters, Amy Black and Ean Hunter!
