Interview with Ben Boyd, Jr

When did you first start writing?
I began three years ago. My day job as Vice President, Regulatory Affairs, for a global smart grid enabling hardware/software company took me around the globe and to most of the states. I found myself on long airplane trips and spending many nights in my hotel room alone. Watching T.V. has never been of much interest. I began writing short stories to entertain myself.
What's the story behind your latest book?
In 2013, an asteroid passed closer to Earth than any other near miss asteroid. That was story enough for me to think, what would me and my family do if it actually hit the Earth. One 'what if, led to another' and my story was born. I've added things like the virus and the crazy President to really make it more dynamic.
How has Smashwords contributed to your success?
Smashwords has made it easy to get the first book of my series published and into the hands of the reader. I am very happy with the process.
What is the greatest joy of writing for you?
The greatest joy so far has been the feedback I got from my beta readers and from a well respected publisher/consultant. The beta readers agreed the first three books in the series were exciting and entertaining. The publisher/consultant told me he thought I had a winner.
What are you working on next?
My story turned out to be 248,000 words. The trend is toward e-books in the 38,000 to 41,000 word size. I have six more ebooks I am working. The Fall of the Americas series Book 2 - The Qixi Virus is next and will be available in September, unless the reader public wants it sooner.
Who are your favorite authors?
I read a lot. Robert Jordan, Clive Cussler, Dan Brown, Brad Thor, George R.R. Martin, Robert Ludlum, and Veronica Roth are my favorites.
When you're not writing, how do you spend your time?
Editing and for fun I do a little more editing.
How do you discover the ebooks you read?
Smashwords has more ebooks than anyone individual distributor. Why look at any others?
Do you remember the first story you ever wrote?
I have the first story I ever wrote. It is about a man traveling from Montreal to Tokyo. The plane crashed in the snow covered arctic mountain wilderness and was trapped in the bathroom of the airplane. He thought he was lucky to survive the crash. He wasn't.
What is your writing process?
If every dance was the box step, dancing would become boring very quick. My formula is simple. The ending always come first. The characters come next. What happens to them in between is a journey I make up and research to make incredible.
Do you remember the first story you ever read, and the impact it had on you?
20,000 Leagues Under the Sea - My first introduction to science fiction/fantasy. I was twelve years old and discovered I had an imagination.
