Interview with Benjamin Sobieck

What is your writing process?
I write with a deadline, even if it's an artificial one. It's amazing what you can get done when you take procrastination off the table.
Do you remember the first story you ever read, and the impact it had on you?
It's not the first story I ever read, but "Jurassic Park" scared the hell out of me as a kid. I'd read it before bed and come down with a serious case of sleepwalking.
What do you read for pleasure?
I only recently got into graphic novels, which I'm enjoying. Otherwise, I like to read mysteries and thrillers populated by interesting characters or unusual plot lines that leave out the parts readers normally skip, as Elmore Leonard would say.
What is your e-reading device of choice?
I'm either on my phone using the Kindle app or on a first-gen Nook e-reader. Between the two marketplaces, I can read just about anything.
Describe your desk
It isn't much. It's a mistake of particle board engineering I picked up from Wal-Mart, held together with five screws and a prayer. My chair is in two pieces, too. I keep falling through the seat. I wish that was a joke.
When did you first start writing?
As soon as I figured out it was a thing a person could do. I'm lucky in that I knew what I wanted to be "when I grow up." Some people wander their whole lives and never find a calling.
How has Smashwords contributed to your success?
It's a huge time saver. It simplifies the process of bringing an e-book into multiple marketplaces. That's the number one reason I'd recommend it to someone looking to get an e-book out there.
What is the greatest joy of writing for you?
Some people prefer the feeling of having written rather than the act itself. I enjoy both. It puts me in a good mood.
What do your fans mean to you?
Fans? Where? I'd like to meet these people.
How do you discover the ebooks you read?
It's either through a recommendation from someone I know or one of those e-mail lists, like Bookbub. I'm also partial to checking out books that appear on tattoo sleeves. Those must be *really* good, right?
What motivated you to become an indie author?
I fall into the hybrid category, and I'm thankful for it. With my indie projects, I appreciate the flexibility. It allows me to try different things without running it up the proverbial flagpole.
