Interview with Beth Durkee

Do you remember the first story you ever read, and the impact it had on you?
The book that started it all for me was Prince Caspian by C. S. Lewis. After reading it, I began working through the books in my father's (very large) basement library.
What do you read for pleasure?
I like Fantasy and Sci Fi.
When did you first start writing?
I actually started writing my first book in 8th or 9th grade. About 20 handwritten pages into it, I gave up. My first finished work was written a little over two decades later and I used a word processor to write it. Word processors make writing much easier.
Do you remember the first story you ever wrote?
I remember the first long story I ever finished. I was in college and my art professor asked us to write an essay to answer, "What is art?" I wrote a 10 page, typewritten story about a little girl who set out to discover what art is. My professor loved it and I received an A+++ on my paper.
What motivated you to become an indie author?
Traditional publishers were not interested in me when I began writing for the public. Now they can just continue to miss out because I am no longer interested in traditional publishers.
When you're not writing, how do you spend your time?
I love to garden and I enjoy interacting with fans, family, friends and acquaintances. I have been accused of talking to anyone with a pulse but that is not true. I happily talk to those without a pulse, as well (ie. my characters).
What inspires you to get out of bed each day?
Usually, I just want the dog to stop bothering me. But on the days he decides to sleep in, I am inspired to rise by the prospect of my daily cup of coffee and some granola.
What are you working on next?
I continue my work on The Legend of Lord Randall Castle with the third novelette in the e-series. At the same time, I am also beginning work on a series of short stories called "Of Avalon" to wet readers' appetites. I am very excited about the new stories leaking out of my pen.
