Interview with Bev Dowdell

Published 2015-09-30.
Do you remember the first story you ever read, and the impact it had on you?
Anne of Green Gables (Bev)
I read this book as a child many times and unknowingly it set in my heart a foundation of self-acceptance when I don't fit into the box that people so often wanted to squash me into and that truth wins out in the end and sincerity (being without wax) is a positive character trait even if it means you reveal what others might say are faults!
How do you approach cover design?
I think having a photo on the cover that captures attention - something living and colourful together with bold colours to draw me in to read the words is important.
What do you read for pleasure?
Robert Fulghum - All I really needed to know I learned in Kindergarten (Bev)
A life-changing book for me. A simple wisdom enveloped in the pages. I have read this book many times. I love being able to open it anywhere and get a snapshot of living life in a matter of minutes.
Robert Fulghum - Uh-Oh (Bev)
Still a great read. Open it on any page and read.. Quiet peace in the pages. I also belong to the Fellowship of the Fridge. When all is silent in the house it's the best time... I can dance around on tiptoe arms twirling in the air and go lurk inside the fridge and only God can see and I can hear him laughing .. He is happiest when his children are at play.
Describe your desk
(Bev) I am surrounded by things that make me smile: Pink auto pencil sharpener, chocolate pottery wine carafe goblets (x 2) for clips and staples, tissue box with cream roses in bloom, shells given to me by Graham collected from the ocean when we go snorkelling, pink stand with purple or bright green pop up post-its, yellow, green and pink highlighters, Smiggle (Australian kids stationery) pink ruler and pink pots for pink scissors and pencils, black texta for writing on sticky reminder notes in large writing to stick on the wall, my desk is a beautiful tan-hue timber with brass ring handles, big screen Samsung for working on InDesign and Website programs and a mini version of my Peugeot 308CC car with mother-of-pearl paint sits on top of one of my 2TB backup drives :)
What is your e-reading device of choice?
iPad and iPhone 6 Plus
When did you first start writing?
Around 2006 at the suggestion of people who I had inspired and encouraged. Said I had something to say people would want to hear and I should share it.
What is the greatest joy of writing for you?
When I know that something I have written and especially Graham's wonderful photos have inspired someone to go after their own dream whether small or big or when I know someone in a difficult time finds hope to believe in themselves and to realise they have great value.
What are you working on next?
The next Work in Progress - Part 2 and 3 - they are already written but I just need to find the time outside of being at work to put it together.
What inspires you to get out of bed each day?
I live with a wonderful man who tells me he loves me every day and I want to get up and make the most of what the day will bring.
When you're not writing, how do you spend your time?
Spending time with Graham is my fav time, working as an Exec Assistant, cooking, cleaning (not too much if I can help it but we both like our home to be clean and reasonably together!)
