Interview with B. A. (Beverly) Smith

Describe your desk
It is a lovely large wooden desk that my Dad made in 1960, it has years of stories evident on its surface. I get to see that surface about every two months, when I organize all my mess. To the untrained eye it appears to be a disaster, but there is method in my madness. It reminds me of how my kitchen looks an hour before the meal,
Where did you grow up, and how did this influence your writing?
I was born a city girl in the capitol of Virginia and lived in Washington DC as a girl. A family tragedy led to spending my formative years in a very rural section of Virginia. Both of these areas had good and bad points. Surroundings do influence your experiences, which in turn will impact one's writing.
When did you first start writing?
As soon as I could hold a crayon I was creating stories. In college it became more polished. Professionally I created educational materials for my patients, their families, and facility staff.
What's the story behind your latest book?
My book "I am Not Depressed, Am I?" came from years of assisting others to manage their emotions and learn to cope with the disorder. The driving force was hearing once too often, this time from a male friend, that statement.
What motivated you to become an indie author?
My family's support.
How has Smashwords contributed to your success?
The experience so far has been great. I write; I knew nothing of formatting or the other hundred things that go into getting a work published. The information provided to you is a big help.
What is the greatest joy of writing for you?
The greatest joy has come from seeing the flash of understanding in someone who is suffering. Another joy is that it quiets the text in my mind, this is especially true of my fiction works.
What do your fans mean to you?
Everything. Information is useless without an audience.
What are you working on next?
My next work is a compilation on Suicide prevention; "Suicide' A Preventable Tragedy: A four Part Series". Also in the works is a fiction piece "Defining Grace". this follows a young girl on her quest to figure out who she is.
Who are your favorite authors?
There are so many. For now I will give you one- Stephen King
What inspires you to get out of bed each day?
The children have always had this privilege, this inspiration.
When you're not writing, how do you spend your time?
Being a Domestic Goddess of Home and Hearth.
Do you remember the first story you ever wrote?
I do, it was about a pony that got hurt
What is your writing process?
I'm not sure there is a process, words flow, visions stream, and my fingers strain to keep up.
Do you remember the first story you ever read, and the impact it had on you?
I don't remember the first story I ever read. I remember the first story I ever loved; it came from my Dad's library and was by Isaac Asminof
How do you approach cover design?
With great fear and anxiety
What are your five favorite books, and why?
Pick any 5 by King, by King
What do you read for pleasure?
I should make you guess.
What is your e-reading device of choice?
I am flexible, don't have a clear winner here.
What book marketing techniques have been most effective for you?
Word of mouth and social media.
How do you discover the ebooks you read?
Friend suggestions.
What information do people need most to make life better?
I am hoping that you, dear reader, will tell me.
