Interview with Brielle Harlow

When you're not writing, how do you spend your time?
I spend time reading! I also enjoy cooking healthy, whole, non-processed foods, walking the nature trail near my house and doing hair.
What motivated you to become an indie author?
I have loved writing since I was a little girl. I always wanted to write a book and I would write poems, songs and short stories in my free time. One day a friend suggested I give it a try. I had never even heard of it before so it was big news to me. It a fantastic opportunity for people to share their passion of reading and writing.
What inspires you to get out of bed each day?
Life I guess. Some times a day in bed is nice but the rest of the time I'd rather be up doing something. How much life can I fit into my days if I spend them all in bed? : )
What is your writing process?
It depends what I'm writing. Some stories I simply think of a scenario and create people to live in it. Other stories start with a feeling like love or fear that I wish to explore or share. For example, I'm working on a coming of age story which is non-erotic because I want to share my experiences and lessons learned with my nieces.
Do you remember the first story you ever read, and the impact it had on you?
I honestly can't remember the very first story I read but I do remember falling in love with The Secret Garden when I was in second grade. We read it in school and then watched the movie. I still don't know why it has always stayed with me. To this day I love reading books set in England especially the English countryside. Book by authors like Philippa Gregory, Daphne Du Maurier and Victoria Holt.
How do you approach cover design?
Since I am starting out I make my own. It was very hard for me at first. I do enjoy it though. I love anything that allows me to be creative. I usually base the cover on something in the story.
What is the greatest joy of writing for you?
The greatest joy would have to be the journey from nothing to something. I feel that I will also really enjoy reaching people and having them enjoy my work. Being new I don't have fans yet but I hope to gain some and get to know them. I'd love open dialogue with my readers so I can grow and get better at what I love doing.
What are you working on next?
I'm working on so many things. I have a lot in the works right now. For erotic fiction I'm working on compilations of short stories in many themes. I'm also planning a more thought out fantasy style story like my Let the Dogs Gather series. For regular fiction I'm working on a coming of age story and also a southern Gothic novel. I'm a big fan of novels in the south like the YaYa series.
Who are your favorite authors?
Victoria Holt, Philippa Gregory, Daphne Du Maurier, Leila Meacham, Margret George, Rebecca Wells...there are so many I love!
