Interview with T D Worley

What motivated you to become an indie author?
At some time in everyone's life there is an desire to write a book. Everyone has a story to tell. Writing a book has been in my bucket list for years, and one day, I decided to just do it.
How has Smashwords contributed to your success?
Smashword made it uncomplicated to self-publish. I doubt that I would have had the patience to go through the traditional methods.
What is the greatest joy of writing for you?
Creating characters that are real and interesting to readers. A character that everyone can identify with.
What do your fans mean to you?
Obviously, a writer wants his book to be liked and desires to have a fan base. Having fans means you have reached an audience.
What are you working on next?
The sequel to 'Jack's List's is 'Jacob's Turn' which shows the evolution of the country following the purge and the impact the events had on the characters and country.. The second book shows the ascent to power by Jacob. 'Jacob's Turn' is more personal and deals with Jacob's relationship to Heather and Kay. The country is still in the throes of adjusting to change, and Jacob finds those he trusts most are corrupt. The third book, 'Marathon, Tx' shows the decisions each of these young people had to make to survive the attempts against their lives by powerful people in the government.
Who are your favorite authors?
Steinbeck, Faulkner, Harper Lee. and Hemingway
What inspires you to get out of bed each day?
As I get out of bed every morning, I thank the Lord for the ability to do so. That comes with being a senior citizen, but I have a great wife and family and they inspire much of my life.
When you're not writing, how do you spend your time?
I like gardening and working on projects in my shop. I do metalwork art as a hobby.
How do you discover the ebooks you read?
My wife got a Nook several years ago and this perked my interest.
Do you remember the first story you ever wrote?
When my daughter Caitlin was very young, I would tell her a story every night. These were made-up stories and all original. I later wrote many of them so they wouldn't be forgotten.
What is your writing process?
Take my laptop and just start by putting ideas down. Creating and describing my characters.
Do you remember the first story you ever read, and the impact it had on you?
The first book I ever read in part was the Bible. Edgar Rice Burroughs 'Tarzan" was one of the earliest remembrances. The characters seemed so real to me. It was amazing how the written words added to an active imagination impacted my mind at seven or eight years old.
How do you approach cover design?
I needed help with this. A friend actually came up with the idea.
What are your five favorite books, and why?
To Kill a Mocking Bird, Gone with the Wind, Of Mice and Men, The Sound and the Fury, The Old Man and the Sea. These books epitomizes what's best in writing. Their characters are so well-defined, the reader knows them like a best friend.
What do you read for pleasure?
Everything
What is your e-reading device of choice?
Nook
What book marketing techniques have been most effective for you?
FaceBook and other social networking avenues

It is an old canning table (well over a hundred years old) with a single drawer.
Where did you grow up, and how did this influence your writing?
Grew up in the country in Central Texas. Since our family didn't get television until 1956, my brothers and I relied on the library and radio for entertainment. Getting a library card at eight was a big deal to me.
When did you first start writing?
Found that I enjoyed writing when I attended school. Whether it was book reports or a history paper, I found I had a knack for expressing myself. It was the same when I got to college. Writing was easy for me. Being a Political Science major meant I had to do a lot of writing and I enjoyed it.
What's the story behind your latest book?
Jake's List was my first fiction book. I developed the idea around conversations I heard and participated in at the local coffee shop
