Interview with Brenda Hickey

What are your five favorite books, and why?
I have a thing for the Young Adult fantasy genre. Yes I'm one of those people. I think more than anything else, it's the innocence and coming of age. I have to admit it's the romance too. Top five would consist of: The Mortal Instruments series, Vampire Academy series, The Twilight saga, Morganville Vampire series, and House of Night novels. Yes, I love vampires.
What is your e-reading device of choice?
I use the Samsung 10.0. The memory is wonderful and it holds a lot of books.
Describe your desk
I have an antique, Queen Anne style desk for my PC. As for my laptop, it's called a La-Z-boy.
Where did you grow up, and how did this influence your writing?
I grew up in a small suburb of Louisville, Kentucky. Growing up here, only partially influenced my writing. I didn't really read much in my twenties and most of my thirties. However, once I picked up a copy of my, once, favorite book, I couldn't get enough. I had to be reading all the time. Still do, when I'm not writing. Most of the books I've read are Young Adult. So, I write what I know and love.
When did you first start writing?
I began writing poems when I was in my teens, but my first of three novels didn't come until 2009.
What's the story behind your latest book?
My work in progress is titled, Through the Door. Where seventeen-year-old, Macy Maitland lives in a broken home. She goes about life building walls around her emotions. Soon, her walls begin to crack and crumble and she is forced to face life on the other side of safe. Flung in a deadly environment, she must learn to survive or escape. No one is safe Through the DOOR! (this description was off the cuff) Synopsis will be polished.
How has Smashwords contributed to your success?
It is more than difficult to get a book published. Most authors will tell you that. Smashwords gives you the opportunity to get your story out there. Every author has a story to tell and Smashwords facilitates that, and then some.
What is the greatest joy of writing for you?
For me, it's telling the story. Getting lost in my characters lives. Exploring different places. Experiencing their emotions. I love it all. Plus researching a book can bring a lot of knowledge.
What do your fans mean to you?
Everything, period. Without readers a book is just words on a screen, or pages of paper. Without readers, your story never gets told.
What are you working on next?
After the novel I'm working on now...possibly a compilation of poems I've written throughout the years.
Who are your favorite authors?
Stephanie Myers, Kristin and P. C. Cast, Richelle Mead, Cassandra Clare, and Rachel Caine.
