Interview with Bill Johnstone

Where did you grow up, and how did this influence your writing?
I was born in Glasgow, Scotland. I had a teacher and mentor who taught me Scottish history and ran our Literary Society. He was a great influence.
Do you remember the first story you ever read, and the impact it had on you?
No but I do remember some special ones.
For some reason a historical novel about the Scottish Duke of Montrose I remember reading with relish. I recall having the Cruel Sea read to me at school as I do Greenmantle.
The first two books I remember owning were Jungle Book and David Copperfield.
What do your readers mean to you?
Readers are all important. Without them, you're writing for yourself. They vary enromously though, as do their perceptions and expectations. It would be ideal to get feedback from every reader. Sadly, that's not possible.
What motivated you to write your novels
I've been a professional journalist most of my life with the discipline of writing. I retired from the daily grind then taught journalism in the USA and UK. But I missed the deadlines and the stories. So, I created a fictional investigative journalist character, Mike McCabe, and so our adventures together began. That was eight novels ago.
What is the greatest joy of writing for you?
Creating the characters, their stories and how they interact are great challenges. Watching the novel unfold, particularly in unforseen directions, is both surprising and stimulating.
Who are your favorite authors?
Dickens and Somerset Maugham
Tell us about your latest book
It's number eight in the series.
Triggered by the death of his professional mentor, this tale of subterfuge and intrigue, takes British investgative journalist Mike McCabe on a journey from the USA to Scotland and back, under the watchful eyes of the British, Russian and American security agencies, as they each play their dangerous political games in pursuit of power and nuclear muscle.
What book marketing techniques have been most effective for you?
I have a small band of loyal readers. Their enthusiasm and promotion has been very effective.
What do you read for pleasure?
Almost every genre, as long as it's interesting.
When did you first start writing?
Articles for the school magazine but more creatively for my speeches in the school's Debating Club.
