Interview with Bill Ward

Where did you grow up, and how did this influence your writing?
I was born in the Midlands but went to a boarding school near Epsom. I didn't particularly enjoy the experience and spent a great amount of time with my head in books escaping from reality. My roots were very working class but being provided a free place at a private school introduced me to the middle and upper classes. I think it has given me a good and broad perspective on life.
When did you first start writing?
I always enjoyed writing as a youngster and as an adult. However I had a career in IT that left little time for anything else and though I started a few books I never finished anything until now.
What's the story behind your latest book?
Having retired I finally had the time to give writing my full attention. I have written the type of book I like to read - a fast paced action thriller.
What motivated you to become an indie author?
I wanted to publish quickly and asess the feedback from readers rather than wait months to hear a probable rejection from a traditional publisher.
How has Smashwords contributed to your success?
I have published in 09/13 so excited but too early to measure success.
What is the greatest joy of writing for you?
Is pure escapism where I can transport myself and readers to anywhere I want and populate my book with great characters.
What do your fans mean to you?
Hope I will have some!
What are you working on next?
A second book is in the pipeline.
Who are your favorite authors?
I am currently reading a series of books about Rome written by Simon Scarrow.
What inspires you to get out of bed each day?
My big family and writing.
When you're not writing, how do you spend your time?
Huge West Brom fan.
Do you remember the first story you ever read, and the impact it had on you?
I can't really remember but I read everything as a child. The Three musketeers, Count of Monte Cristo, Secret Garden, Black Beauty etc etc.
How do you approach cover design?
I use a norwegian creative person who is great. I explain the basics of the plot and make suggestions and back comes great ideas.
What are your five favorite books, and why?
Impossible question! Couldn't choose 5 films either.
Describe your desk
Organised chaos. Would be just organised but for all the kids.
