Interview with Jason Bost, Sr

How do you discover the ebooks you read?
Word of mouth! Nothing promotes a good book better than hearing someone you know rave about how amazing it was!
Do you remember the first story you ever read, and the impact it had on you?
I don't remember the first story I read but I know that I loved any book by Dr. Suess! My first 'favorite' book was 'The Giving Tree' and I to this day, I still give this book as a holiday present over and over again!
How do you approach cover design?
I usually come up with a base concept and then sit down with my graphic designer and create a digital sketch of the concept. For my first book, I utilized the concept from some of my favorite classic hip hop albums, Nas, Biggie and others used images of themselves as children on their covers and I love that concept, especially given the ties that my book has to my youth and growing up.
What are your five favorite books, and why?
"Makes me Wanna Holler" by Nathan McCall: he managed to capture what it feels like growing up as a black man in America during his time (1960s-1980s) and it is such a well written book.
"Autobiography of Malcom X" by Alex Haley: classic book, well written and inspirational. The first book that I ever read that made me want to be more than what I was.
"The Alchemist" by Paulo Coelho: Simply written yet full of detail with a classic feel like Aesop's Fables, packed full of life lessons!
"Things Fall Apart" by Chinua Achebe: another simply written yet beautifully descriptive book!
"To Kill a Mockingbird" by Harper Lee: classic book combining my passions (law and race relations)
"The Adventures of Huckleberry Finn" by Mark Twain: amazingly descriptive classic American novel.
What do you read for pleasure?
Biographies and Non-fiction and occasionally Stephen King!
Describe your desk
clutter, clutter and more clutter!
When did you first start writing?
I started writing my fist book in 2013 but since I was a child, when anyone would ask, "what do you want to be when you grow up?" I would always answer, "a writer"!!
What's the story behind your latest book?
My life, from tragedies to triumphs, all through the lens of growing up bi-racial in America.
What motivated you to become an indie author?
I spent a decade plus working independent projects in the recording industry and recognize the advantages of staying independent. There are so many great promotional tools available for indie authors, this is a great time to self publish or publish with a small company.
