Interview with J M Taylor

What are you working on next?
The story of the modern woman who decides to completely change her life and be the captain of her destiny. Bixie is a single mom, "the main actor in her life" with a freelance job styling and blogging for magazines. It's all a balancing act. She finds great joy and relief when she hops on the city-bikes to shuttle between assignments. Solutions to daily life's existential questions and mundane practical problems, come to her as she navigates the city streets and neighbourhoods. Bixie finds that she develops super powers and along with her vivid imagination, her "eco save the planet" attitude and her love of life, she gets by everything. The adventures of Bixichick are always filled with surprises and candid exchanges with her children, herself, and ... well ... the Dog.
What gets you out of bed in the morning?
A cup of tea ... the kids ... the dog ... the excitement of a good giggle and the anticipation of a new day. Oww and the world doesn't function without me ... pfff (wink).
Do you remember the first story you ever wrote?
Yes, I was amazed at the life style and crazy money being dished out in the horse world after a stint working in Florida. So I wrote about that flamboyant circle of people ... It was great fun to observe, but also discouraging to see how few of the über-wealthy riders practiced horsemanship. So I was happy to leave after a brief stay.
How do you approach cover design?
Trial and error ... but I love to do design so I have a big input.
What are your five favorite books, and why?
Memoirs of a Geisha ... well from that first paragraph you're there ... and how beautiful those resilient, hopeful and refined characters speak to us.
The Beauty Myth, because it is smart, courageous and relevant.
The Power of Now, because it set humanity as a whole, on the course of self awareness.
The Astonishing Power of Emotions, because it is the missing link to create and to allow what we create.
The Unbearable Lightness of Being, because it is.
What do you read for pleasure?
Ever since having two kids and a busy life, I have foregone the pleasures of reading, (amongst other things) for lack of long luxurious stretches of peaceful time. Now I flip through Instagram for some quick pleasure, I love photography, I love humans. Follow me :

Describe your desk.
Brushed stainless steel squares, serve as legs at either ends of my desk. The top surface is an off-white sueded melamine about 13/4 inch thick. I have my MacBookPro, my mobile phone and my iPad for Songza which I turn off when I write. A jar of water with a hand painted red heart on it, an idea I had one day listening to Dr. Masaru Emoto's findings about water, while I was applying nail polish to my toes. (wink) I have a picture of a tree in a frame to my left, some pens and highlighters, a few piles of projects to 'get to' and two 'todo' lists. One for me to get through in the next 48hrs and the other as an intention for source to line things up for me, till I am ready to deal with it. And of course my dog #BaileyLeBichon always by my side.
