Interview with Graham Blackburn

Where did you grow up, and how did this influence your writing?
I grew up in post-war London which was an exciting time of change and rebirth. The empire was disappearing and there was an influx of new people into Britain which really expanded people's ideas about what was important. Much of the old order was changing and it felt like anything was possible.
When did you first start writing?
I wrote my first book at age nine. It was a book about the history of Scotland which I found incredibly exotic. Thereafter I never stopped — and contact with the past remained enormously interesting to me.
What's the story behind your latest book?
My latest book continues to explore (with humour) the things that control us, willy-nilly, despite what we think is important.
What motivated you to become an indie author?
Having published over a dozen books with legacy publishers I wanted more control over my editing — and how my books were designed. It turned out that many of the things regular publishers had denied me were precisely the things that made my independently published books so successful. It's amuch more rewarding process now.
