Interview with Brian L. Curry

What motivated you to become an indie author?
That's a great question and I'll answer it like this: After using a couple of other publishing agencies and being thoroughly displeased with several and various issues, I decided to take matters into my own hands. However, I wasn't exactly sure on how to do that. Fortunately for me, I had a couple of well respected professionals that I met, while working on a couple of other projects, point me into the direction of being an independent author and using independent sources. I am grateful for the divine redirect and I will certainly share and pass the information on to others!
How has Smashwords contributed to your success?
Smashwords, for me, was a Godsend. Being unfamiliar with the territory, seeing several agencies that promote so many offers, and not knowing which way to go, I simply prayed. While browsing articles of other independent authors and their stories of success or otherwise, I came across an article that mentioned Smashwords and had a hyperlink to the site. I clicked on the link and the rest is history.
What is the greatest joy of writing for you?
The greatest joy for me in writing, I believe has not yet happened because I'm new. I'm still waiting to see where exactly my books and message will resonate. Upon seeing that, and knowing that there are others who "get me," I believe that will be my greatest joy, when I discover those who can identify with me and my stories.
What do your fans mean to you?
Everything. Especially when you don't have any! As I stated in an earlier question, being new, I'm still waiting to see exactly where my message will resonate the most. I'm really looking forward to making those connections and receiving feedback.
What are you working on next?
Well, Book One is currently being developed for film by M. Rutledge McCall. The screenplay should be completed by this summer. I believe that I tell a very powerful story on multiple levels. I have just completed Book 2, but won't be releasing that for another month or so. I will then begin on Book 3, the final book of the series.
Who are your favorite authors?
Seeing as how I read anything and everything from westerns to comics, books on philosophy and culture, to medical manuals and biblical literature, some of my favorite authors are William W. Johnstone, Stan Lee, Aaron Allston, Watchmen Nee, Moses, and more!
What inspires you to get out of bed each day?
My family. We are a blended family. My wife, Carolyn, and I have 5 children in the house. Hers, mine and ours! If I slept too long, my 6 year old daughter, Jada, will come demanding attention! Who has time to sleep?
When you're not writing, how do you spend your time?
Studying. I'm currently working towards my Doctorate, enrolled in Destiny College International's Master's program for leadership and executive coaching. I'm also active in our community and local church. Add those on the sporting activities of my kids and there goes my time. Not to mention, fighting for some alone time with my wife!
How do you discover the ebooks you read?
Amazon and now Smashwords!
Do you remember the first story you ever wrote?
Yes. My earliest recollection of the first story that I ever wrote was about a mouse helping a lion take a thorn out of its paw. I was in the 5th grade. The story was so good, my teacher thought I copied it! I got an A+. Maybe because I titled it "Leo the Lion and Mickey the Mouse," which was actually a cartoon. If I remember correctly, I think that I had watched the cartoon on television and when the teacher asked us to write a story, I wrote the story I saw, through my eyes.
What is your writing process?
After prayer and meditation, I write when I feel inspired, the way I feel inspired to write. I'm not bound or locked into to any system of writing. When I write, I am the artist and I design and create the world in anyway I feel inspired to at the time. Example: When I was young, I would color the grass blue and make the sky green. Art is what you make it. Flow freely and don't be bound or locked into a system. Individuality and originality is what defines you.
