Interview with Jason S. Blayne

What do your fans mean to you?
My fans are everything since I am an independent YA/NA Author. It takes a lot to write, the reviews can be brutal but to reach out and touch just one fan to encourage them makes the difference. My fans have such a passion for the way I bring out the emotions of my characters that they connect with them. Even my older readers have been taken back to their younger days and memories of fun with friends, plotting pranks, getting away with things, just so much and that makes the biggest impact to me that my fans can connect and enjoy the ride from the age of 13 and up that makes it worth it to me.
What are you working on next?
I'm working on Shadow Wolves: Tears of Blood, it takes place 16 years after Youth Inexperience. It brings out the best in their skills, shows where the trio, Ginny, Andy, and the others how life has treated them. Some have become huge successes while others have been forced to alter or change their dreams. There's still some fallout from the chaos that takes place in Shadow Wolves Youthful Inexperience, but overall there are going to be more surprises, bigger explosions, major cities brought to their knees, a criminal system that shakes everyone to their core, and even a new way to look at things beyond what we believe can happen in stories. I'm going to make this the most important piece of the series that it jumps out to everyone who enjoys: love, sex, cars, fire fights, racing, and so much more.
What inspires you to get out of bed each day?
My biggest inspiration has always been people who doubt what I can do in life. I've been told I'll never reach much because I have a small frame or because I rush through skipping steps. I might move fast but I make sure I pay attention to what I do so I learn from the mistakes that come with progress. I want to become one of the best and the only way to do that is through experience. I live my life to learn and how to improve life through not only my writing but throw in some laughter, listen to other people tell their story (could even be something I could twist and use in one of my books) and just be there to say I done it or I can and I will.
When you're not writing, how do you spend your time?
Working on cars, reading, spending time with my son, traveling, cooking, I love to travel with my wife, we take "mini road trips" we both love discovering new places to visit and trying to new things that aren't your everyday trends. The world isn't as wild or able to be tamed quite like it used to be but you can still make it your own and we do, some days aren't better than others but hey that's when you get creative.
How do you discover the ebooks you read?
I have a Kindle App and I like to browse through Barne and Noble
Do you remember the first story you ever wrote?
Absolutely, it was 1998 my 8th grade English class, we were reading and story with an open ending and our final assignement for the semester was to write our own ending to the novel.
What is your writing process?
I'll sit down, plug in my headphone like I did when I was a kid, listen to music, have a glass of hot tea, or ice old Code Red and dwell into the world of writing.
Do you remember the first story you ever read, and the impact it had on you?
Sadly enough I don't remember which is a rarity for me, but I do remember it was fictional and my second story I read, The Diary of Anne Frank.
How do you approach cover design?
I used an outside source, but very talented eBook designer. Artist Carey Abbott
What are your five favorite books, and why?
To Kill a Mocking Bird-Classic American classic and I love history

Diary of Anne Frank-Again I'm a history geek.

Hunt for Red October/The Sum of All Fears-I enjoy Tom Clancy but who doesn't

1984-Bone Chilling writing
What do you read for pleasure?
History mainly, anything World War 1
What is your e-reading device of choice?
Nook, then Kindle
What book marketing techniques have been most effective for you?
Coming up with my own, who knows my work better than me, lol.
Describe your desk
Desk??? I sit on my couch/oversized chair with my laptop on my lap or on the army of the couch/chair. Got to be comfortable.
Where did you grow up, and how did this influence your writing?
I grew up in a small West Virginia town along Route 2 in Lesage. You either love it or hate it, it's so small we only had a blinking warning light by the old FoodLand grocery store that's it other than a couple of stop signs at intersections.
When did you first start writing?
My 8th grade year in 1998, I've written plenty of short stories, and actually this is how Shadow Wolves began. My English professor read it and asked me to keep going and hand in what I had finished by the end of the semester.
What's the story behind your latest book?
Shadow Wolves: Youthful Inexperience is complete...Now Shadow Wolves: Tears of Blood brings back your favorite chacatcers all grown up and saving lives this time rather than ruining lives compared when they were kids and the hardships that have happened within the 16 years from the end of Youthful Inexperience.
What motivated you to become an indie author?
Well to be honest, I've tried to get noticed by the big publishing companies, but since they say no, I'll see if fans say yes. Their voices matter more than the big wigs who think they own the industry alone.
What you do bring to the table for readers that other authors don't offer?
Right now Young Adult/New Adult Fiction isn't the hot topic, but what I do bring is a story that compels readers to dig into the raw emotion of the story. I dig deep into my 3 main characters and bring out their best qualities while supporting them with the best counterparts to help them grow and come into their own throughout the story.
How has Smashwords contributed to your success?
Smashwords thankfully has spread my work out to bring in plenty of previews and quite a few sales. Now that I have an updated and better edition for readers I hope they continue to believe in my work and allow more readers to enjoy the story of James, Josh, and Justin getting into situations they know better to be involved.
