Interview with Kristina Chesler

What motivated you to become an indie author?
I have always loved to write but could never finish anything I had started. "The Year of Second Chances" was relatively quick for me to write, it just flowed onto my computer and I'm proud of the message it conveys. My second novel, "All the Pieces" came to me and kept expanding into more ideas and I'm excited to continue their story.
How has Smashwords contributed to your success?
I wouldn't call me a success...yet. I just published and Smashwords has been so easy to use. I can only hope as my novel gets seen by more people it'll take off.
What is the greatest joy of writing for you?
The greatest joy is that I can create characters, sometimes taking pieces of myself and I can create whatever outcome I want which is kind of therapeutic. If a reader is touched by my story then that'll be icing on the cake.
What are you working on next?
Right now I'm coming up with ideas and a few different concepts on how to continue Lena and Trent's story, as well as back track and look at Lena's relationship with Brandon, as a sort of prequel to "All the Pieces".
Who are your favorite authors?
In the past year I have read some great books. Typically I love a book where the character captures my attention and I can relate to whatever situation they are going through. There are some books, however that are just all-out fun to read such as Veronica Roth's Divergent Series. I have enjoyed Colleen Hoover's books (Slammed, etc), Sylvia Day's Crossfire Series, John Green (even though I cry, the rawness of his books enthralls me), Rebecca Donovan, and J.R. Ward, to name a few.
What is your writing process?
I don't have much experience to speak of but I pretty much sat down and started typing. I take notes so I can remember certain things without having to look back through the book. Also, sometimes I'll think of an idea or a chapter and write it out then fit it into the book at a later time. Typically I try to write while my kids are in school because it's harder to write when they are underfoot, so writing for me is more like a hobby.
What do you read for pleasure?
I have an eclectic taste for books. I enjoyed reading novels such as Twilight, The Black Dagger Brotherhood, and Divergent. On the other side of the spectrum I also enjoyed 50 Shades of Gray, The Crossfire Trilogy, Slammed, On the Island, and the Breathing Trilogy. As long as the book is interesting and I connect to the characters, I'm happy.
What is your e-reading device of choice?
Honestly my husband keeps telling me to buy a kindle and I should with as much as I read but right now I read on my iphone. It's with me wherever I go so I never forget it.
