Interview with Douglas Higgins

Where did you grow up, and how did this influence your writing?
Growing up in Orange, CT music was a huge part of my life. Being a memeber of a popular rock band exposed me at a young age to the business world and its pitfalls. I was smart enough to leave the band behind and take advantage of the college education that my parents gave me. Stetson University was where I really blossomed into the man that I am today.
When did you first start writing?
My writing began with business communications. I was always told I was able to write, "a good letter."
As time went on, friends began asking me to write different types of letters.
What's the story behind your latest book?
Many years ago someone actually told me that something similar was happening to him. I researched the topic and read about the Pogue carburator incident in the 1930ies. That began the process of formulating my story.
What motivated you to become an indie author?
I am retired and had a lot of time on my hands. I wanted to have something to show for all this free time. I first wrote the book, then I began the learning process of self publishing.
How has Smashwords contributed to your success?
I hope that their expanded distribution channels will add to sales.
What is the greatest joy of writing for you?
Finishing the book, and seeing it for sale!
What do your fans mean to you?
I am humbled with much gratitude by them.
What are you working on next?
Rick Greyfeather's next adventure. It will lead him to the island of Bonaire.
Who are your favorite authors?
MacDonald, Connelly, Patterson and Parker
What inspires you to get out of bed each day?
Having a heart condition made me realize that I need to be thankful for everyday of life!
When you're not writing, how do you spend your time?
Living in South Florida allows me to enjoy fishing, golf and enjoying the beach year round. I also enjoy fine dining in all the great restaurants in the area.
How do you discover the ebooks you read?
Mostly on friends recommendations.
Do you remember the first story you ever wrote?
Yes, it was for a good friend who owned a restaurant down here that needed a story about the restaurant's theme on his menus.
What is your writing process?
I do not use outlines. I keep the basic plot in my head and just keep writing.
Do you remember the first story you ever read, and the impact it had on you?
Yes, it was the Travis Magee novels by John D. MacDonald.
What do you read for pleasure?
Mysteries of course.
