Interview with Brandy Woodfolk

What inspires you to get out of bed each day?
I have four beautiful, incredible children who rely on me for day-to-day care. I love being a mom and watching them grow. Home schooling not only gives me the chance to educate and guide them but also gives me more of a chance to get to know them as individuals. Knowing that my oldest is only a few years from college motivates me to get up and not waste one minute that I could be with them.
When you're not writing, how do you spend your time?
While I work out of the home part-time, I spend most of my time taking care of my family. Home schooling and writing lesson plans take a lot of time. I also love to read, dance, play with my children, paint and blog around household chores errands.
Do you remember the first story you ever wrote?
When I was in kindergarten, we had Show-and-Tell every week. Instead of taking toys or other belongings, I would write and illustrate stories about school and the bus. The teacher would always smile when I would read them out loud. That was when I discovered my love of writing.
What is your writing process?
Generally, when a scene from a new story pops in my mind I'm in the shower. Once I get out, I hurry and write it down. From that point, I usually allow the story to develop in my mind for a few months, then sit down and write for as long as possible. Once I have finished it, I'll go back to add and edit and have a couple of friends read it for their reaction. My awesome husband suffers through a lot of hours of me talking through plots and advises in any way he sees fit.
What do you read for pleasure?
My favorite authors include Colleen Cobble and Denise Austin, though I have quite a few others. I read mostly romance stories because they are usually quick reads and I don't have a lot of free time. However, I'm open to reading many different genres.
What is your e-reading device of choice?
I have a Surface Pro 3 that I wanted for a very long time. As a laptop and a tablet, it is perfect for everything I need and want to do, including read.
Describe your desk
In one word: chaotic. With all of my writing and homeschool items, it is covered from end to end. I have a stack of reproducible worksheets that is easily more than a foot high, a cup of writing implements, a three hole punch, a notebook full of book drafts, and on and on it goes.
How has Smashwords contributed to your success?
In the past, an author had to attract and court a publisher to get their book out. With sites like Smashwords, an author has the opportunity to get their work out and get attention for future works. Smashwords has taken a lot of frustration and stress out of this process for me by allowing me to get my book out to be seen.
What is the greatest joy of writing for you?
I love sharing experiences and lessons I have learned. I feel as though we learn something in every experience and we should share our knowledge to help others. I also love developing characters. I am interested in so many different things and writing allows me to explore those things through my characters.
Do you remember the first story you ever read, and the impact it had on you?
I can't say I remember the first I ever read but I do remember the first book that had an impact on me. I picked up a book at the library about Harriet Tubman. I really had no idea what I was picking up. All I know is that I was running out of books in the children's section of the library and began picking up random ones that I hadn't yet read. I learned that history class has nothing on biographies and autobiographies. Of course, I had been taught about slavery and thought it was horrible but had no idea what it was really like. Reading about Harriet Tubman brought that time to life for me.
