Interview with Brandi "BeeRocka" Janay

Where did you grow up, and how did this influence your writing?
I grew up in Philadelphia. I moved a few times in my life and have grown up in both the Logan and Northeast section of Philadelphia. Two opposite ends; the hood vs. the suburbs. These opportunities of residence have given me versatile writing. The inspiration from the scenery, the atmosphere of the environment and different interactions with others have introduced me to different stories.
Do you remember the first story you ever read, and the impact it had on you?
I actually don't remember the first story I ever read. That was long ago. But, I do know that at a very young age I had a love for reading.
What are your five favorite books, and why?
The autobiographies of Malcolm X and Assata Shakur are my top favorite books. These books have changed my life. They have encouraged me to be enlightened and to have an awareness for myself and others.
Lastly, I love the Harry Potter series. They've taught me more than magic. They've taught me sacrifice, love, friendship. self-belief and fearlessness.
When did you first start writing?
I first started writing in elementary school. It started with a diary and then, transformed into poetry throughout the years. I was about eight years old and a third-grader during this time.
What's the story behind your latest book?
The story behind my latest book is that it's a compilation of the many things I've experienced or have been told through other interactions. It started a few months ago when I moved. I thought to myself, "What happens in this house" because no one would have known the many things that were happening in that house. It was an epiphany to just share the many secrets or thoughts that aren't the usual norms of conversation.
What is the greatest joy of writing for you?
The greatest joy of writing is knowing that I have the ability to give words power and I give my feelings a voice. No one can tell you that you are right or that you are wrong. This gives you confidence to just speak on many things that aren't always told; thought about but, not told.
What do your fans mean to you?
My SUPPORTERS mean everything to me. They have helped me through the hardest times. Just from the conversation, interaction or the inspiration, my supporters allow me to think differently and to detail the overlooked thoughts.
What inspires you to get out of bed each day?
Wanting more out of life is what inspires me to get out of bed each day. Knowing that I want better, I want to be better, I want to have better, live, think, and speak better is what inspires me. I know that everyday that I wake up, life is not through with me yet. Having loved ones and a talent/passion is what urges me to just want to experience it.
When you're not writing, how do you spend your time?
When I'm not writing, I'm thinking about the next thing to write or to better my writing. Either it be, working on other projects such as, my website or promoting my book, I just always try to implement my passion in my day.
What are you working on next?
Right now, my only focus is graduating college in May. As far as my book, I just want it to inspire others.
