Interview with Brandon Red

How has Smashwords contributed to your success?
It's allowed me to start publishing. I had plenty of ready material but the hurdles of self-publishing - managing payments and hosting files and filling forms and so forth - seemed a lot to overcome. In contrast, working with Smashwords, getting great covers and the formatting done was a single weekend commitment, and now I'm all energized again, eager to get more stories out there!
What is the greatest joy of writing for you?
Two things, really. One is discovering that once I'm done with a piece and re-reading it some time later, I still like it. Two is knowing that others are discovering my stories and enjoying them. Getting positive feedback from readers is the best thing I can imagine.
What do your fans mean to you?
They're the point of doing this. I wrote for myself for decades, but that always left me unfulfilled. It's so important to make a connection with an audience and share the stories.
What are you working on next?
I'm writing the fourth and final part of the first big The Party arc, with vampires and an actual dungeon in it. It's lots of fun! Then I'm considering an interactive special feature to finish the series with, working with a free tool called Twine. Beyond The Party, there's some science fiction stuff I'd like to explore. Working on erotica is so enjoyable, I don't see myself doing anything else for a while.
What inspires you to get out of bed each day?
I have a dayjob that really inspires me. I don't want to go into details, but it's creative and something I always wanted to do. Working on my fiction gives me an outlet to be someone else and to reach a different audience... or I guess they might be some of the same people, actually, but likewise as someone else, themselves!
When you're not writing, how do you spend your time?
Getting to spend time with my wife is the reason I do everything else. We go on adventures and do our best to make life interesting for everyone around us.
How do you discover the ebooks you read?
Twitter chat, Amazon listings and reviews on blogs. Recommendations from friends are great for other stuff, but we don't really discuss erotica, so that needs to come from strangers.
Do you remember the first story you ever wrote?
I do! I think I was thirteen. I didn't realize it at the time, but I was trying to write a Stephen King high school murder mystery. Heavy Twin Peaks vibes, too.
What is your writing process?
I pour out scenes and ideas into Scrivener and when I have enough, I read through it and write an outline. Then I dive in and write it all, jumping around as I like to keep it interesting. At some point you only have the less interesting, but crucial bits left to write, and that's a hard place to be, but when it comes you're so far into the process already that it would seem a waste to stop, so you just plow through. Then it's left to simmer for a good long while, perhaps a month or so. Returning, I read through it all, making notes and spellchecking. Then it goes back to the shelf. Returning for the final time, I start editing. This can take weeks to months, depending on how much rewriting is required.
How do you approach cover design?
I look for an image I like that conveys something about the book, going through royalty free stock photos. I trust myself in being the judge of what fits. Then I find one like that image that I can actually afford! Finally, I do the layout and color correction myself, trying out different variations until I'm happy. It's a single night thing, generally.
What is your e-reading device of choice?
Both the iPad and the iPhone. I read quite a bit on the laptop, too; epub works great on modern widescreen displays when you can get three pages across.
