Interview with John Branning

How would you describe The Da Vinci Code to someone who has not read any of Dan Brown's previous novels?
"Tom Hanks is in the movie version, so picture him doing the stuff that happens in the book."
What do you read for pleasure?
When you say "pleasure", what do you mean, exactly? I enjoy reading anything that helps me fall asleep and is light enough not to startle me awake when it slips from my hands and bonks me on the nose.
I'd like to talk about the latest book in the Stephanie Plum series, Tricky Twenty-Two. What was the inspiration for this story?
Well, I believe the author had written twenty-one previous books in that series and then decided to write another one -- perhaps to fulfill a contractual obligation.
What are your feelings about the movie version of Fight Club?
I didn't make any money off of it. Of course, I didn't write the book it was based upon, either.
What does "writing" mean to you?
It means the activity or skill of marking coherent words on paper and composing text. Does it mean something else to you?
If you were trapped in an elevator, what fictional character would you want with you?
Preferably one who knew how to fix a stuck elevator. If such a character does not exist, then one who had not just eaten a burrito for lunch.
So many women all over the world have relationships with fashion magazines, it is no wonder that The Devil Wears Prada generated so much buzz. Were you surprised by all of the excitement surrounding the book?
No, not really.
Carrie in The Carrie Diaries gets into all sorts of scrapes with boys. What advice would you like to give young women?
I'm glad you asked me that. My advice for young women would be to follow the example of literally anyone else on the face of the earth who isn't a member of the Kardashian clan.
Is the criminal-justice system broken?
Not so much "broken" as "defunct". It's pretty much a free-for-all out there these days, don't you think? Particularly for people of color.
Was anything particularly interesting to you about the twists of fate that allowed the Wright Brothers to become who they became?
I think few people know that Orville Wright was actually bumped off that first flight and then was redirected through Pittsburgh. Also, Wilbur was going to pack Orville's luggage for him until Orville pointed out that wasn't permitted under TSA guidelines.
Can you describe a typical day spent writing?
Typically, the day is 24 hours long, beginning at 12:00 AM and ending shortly after 11:59 PM. There are periods of brightness and darkness, and sometimes it gets a little windy. At some point during the day, I string together series of words to form what I like to call "sentences", and if all goes well a few of them may turn out to be "funny."

Filled with self-deprecating humor and laced with acerbic commentary, Selfie-Facing is John Branning's debut collection of humorous essays. The author wittily points out his failings as a husband, father and homeowner, and also pokes fun at grammar and motivational quotes. Filled with keen observations and puns aplenty, fans of Dave Barry will love Selfie-Facing. Fans of the Kardashians will not.
