Interview with Bree Vanderland

Published 2013-11-16.
When did you first start writing?
I think I started writing like every child does, essays in school, creative writing assignments, notes to pass in class, ect. I can't really say when I became serious about it all, but I am glad I have.
What do you read for pleasure?
I love horror and fantasy books. I like the thrill of a horror mystery that keeps my heart pumping and me on the edge of my seat. I like fantasy to escape my own problems and think of another place outside my own life.
What inspires you to get out of bed each day?
My friends. With many of them living all around the world, they're usually messaging me early too about something to do with a book. That's lovely to wake up to!
What are your three favorite books, and why?
1. Harry Potter series - I grew up on this series. I can't live without it <3
2. Chronicles of Narnia - I love the idea of escaping to a new world. Let's do it ;)
3. Anything by Philippa Gregory - I fell in love with her writing with "The Other Boleyn Girl" and now I've collected her books <3
Who are your favorite authors?
J.K. Rowling.
Philippa Gregory.
Stephen King.
George R.R. Martin.
Charles Dickens.
Anne Rice.

And there are so many more that I cannot name off the top of my head!
What is your e-reading device of choice?
Kindle! I got it as a Christmas present and can't put it down!
Describe your desk
That would be my bed xD I like sitting on my comfy bed and writing.
What's the story behind your latest book?
The latest book would be... "Sweet Dreams." It should be the newest book that will come out next. It's quite strange really and I'm writing it with Leah Hutchinson. It's a modern town where fairy tale characters have escaped to for a safe haven, led by Jacob Grimm. Except, it isn't all that safe. As people start dying, Sarabelle (Tinkerbell) and Ariella (Ariel) try to solve the case before the few humans in the town discover what's going on. There are some love interests and definitely NOT a YA book.
How do you approach cover design?
I think the first thing I do is think about the book entirely and where it takes place. If I really have an amazing photo in my mind about that, I will try to convey that idea to the designer. Otherwise, I like giving them parts of the book and giving them control over it. It's always amazing to see what they come up with.
When you're not writing, how do you spend your time?
I still write. I love writing music (I'm going to college to major in music education) or I play an instrument. I talk to my friends ALL THE TIME as well <3
What do your fans mean to you?
My fans mean everything to me. Without them, I wouldn't be where I am today without their constant nagging to get another book out there. LOL.
