Interview with Brian Lovestar

What is your e-reading device of choice?
I have a Nook but I also use the Kindle app on my iPhone.
Describe your desk
Organised chaos.
What is your writing background?
I’ve always written. I was making comics on toilet paper at the age of 5. I wrote for Sky TV in the 90s and had my own weekly teletext column for Living TV. I wrote a dramedy called ‘Maisie Loves ?’ for the BBC and got to stage 4 in their 6-stages-into-production review process. I was told most fail at stage 2 and received good positive feedback. And I entered a script called ‘Bob’s Your Aunty’ in the Transcomedy Award 2012.
What's the story behind your latest book?
A man loses the love of his life in a tragic road traffic accident, but finds it doesn’t necessarily mean he has to say goodbye forever. He finds a way to reunite with her in an alternate reality, but there are dangerous consequences in doing so, from which there may be no return. It’s all linked into an ancient Chinese philosophy about dreaming and it’s about how love doesn’t ever really have to die… if death is not the end.
So what made you decide to write a book?
It was a challenge for me. Did I have it in me to write a book? I sat down at my laptop in August 2012. Exactly a year to the day I was ready to send my book to print. This following months of editing. I actually finished the book in March and spent 4 or 5 months editing it.
What ended up on the cutting room floor?
There is a whole alternate ending that I will probably put up on my website www.brianlovestar.com at some point. It went in the very final draft when I just had a new idea that kind of linked in better with the original idea.
What was your inspiration?
I came across a couple of quotes based on ancient French and Chinese philosophies on dreaming. When we dream, we don’t realise we are dreaming. This led philosophers to wonder whether one could actually be dreaming constantly, instead of being in a waking reality. I’ve always been intrigued by dreaming and the reasons behind it. Where do we really go when we dream? It fascinates me and I wanted to explore this further.
When you're not writing, how do you spend your time?
Travelling. I've been to over 30 countries and still only seen about 5% of the world. I think its about time I upped my game.
Will there be a sequel?
I have a few ideas. It mainly depends on feedback from this one. When I originally changed the ending I thought it seemed very final. And I wanted it to. I wanted the book to have a cohesive feel with a fully told story. But there’s always a ‘to be continued…’
So, what’s next?
I would like to start writing my second novel, whether that be a sequel or a completely new project. I’m going to be very busy promoting ‘Dream Myself Alive’ for a while, but hopefully I’ll find time soon.
