Interview with Maggie San Miguel

Who are your favorite authors?
Ernest Hemingway, Elizabeth Gilbert, Pete Hamill, Dylan Thomas...too many to list
What inspires you to get out of bed each day?
Writing, of course!
When you're not writing, how do you spend your time?
Snuggling with my dog, going for walks, working, spending as much as possible with my son.
How do you discover the ebooks you read?
Friends tell me about most of my favorites
Do you remember the first story you ever wrote?
Yes, it was a chilling short story about a soldier who'd just been shot (from his point of view) face-down in the mud, bleeding, watching his army buddies' boots running past him. Unnerving, as I was only ten years old!
What is your writing process?
I meditate first, then I ask my guides & angels to help me. Then I allow a sort of "mind film" to begin and I write what I see. Strange, yes..but it works for me.
Do you remember the first story you ever read, and the impact it had on you?
Winnie the Pooh. It gave me great comfort and I still have that same book 50 years later that I pick up from time to time if I need some comfort.
How do you approach cover design?
I ask my mentor and my publicist what they think of it and use my instincts a lot.
What are your five favorite books, and why?
A Heartbreaking Work of Staggering Genuis - it makes me laugh out loud; Joe Vampire (again, laugh out loud); A Moveable Feast because of its exquisite language and imagery; Eat Pray Love because it's gorgeous; Anything by Wayne Dyer because I learn about spirituality.
What do you read for pleasure?
Wayne Dyer mostly
What is your e-reading device of choice?
What book marketing techniques have been most effective for you?
Hiring a great publicist
Describe your desk
A basket full of reference materials, a coffee cup, a candle, box of tissues, pens and my notebook I use for research and notes for my new book.
Where did you grow up, and how did this influence your writing?
Greenwich, Connecticut. I was raised around avid readers and the scenery was magical so all of that sparked my imagination constantly.
When did you first start writing?
Five years old.
What's the story behind your latest book?
A memoir about my father's involvement with the Mafia and Teamsters in NYC and how that influenced my life.
What motivated you to become an indie author?
Being a writer has always been my dream.
What is the greatest joy of writing for you?
The process and finding that moment when the book is writing's magic.
What are you working on next?
A historical novel about a little Hopi girl born with pure consciousness who meets the musicians playing at Woodstock.
What do your fans mean to you?
