Interview with Elizabeth James

Published 2014-06-30.
Who are your favorite authors?
My favorite authors are Laura Kaye, Stephanie Rowe, Kresley Cole, Mimi Jean Pamfiloff, and J.R. Ward. There are a ton of others but those are my top go-to when the publish authors.
What inspires you to get out of bed each day?
My life inspires me to get out of bed every day. I have a wonderful husband, three beautiful doggies, a good job that I love and my passion for writing and the ability to follow that passion by publishing books.
When you're not writing, how do you spend your time?
My husband and I love to ride our motorcycle in the mountains and on the coast of NC. We also love spending time with our family and friends.
How do you discover the ebooks you read?
Usually word of mouth is the way I discover new ebooks. My friends have very good taste and can usually point me in the right direction based on my tastes.
Do you remember the first story you ever wrote?
I began to write a book when I was just 15 years old and I almost finished it but as most 15 year old do, I got involved with other interests. Now all these years later, I've started writing again and that book is possibly going to make an appearance again!
What is your writing process?
I write in the complete silence and I do it as it comes to my mind in a story not in jumps from chapter to chapter. I don't do outlines, I just start writing and let it flow out.
Do you remember the first story you ever read, and the impact it had on you?
My first real book was a book by Victoria Holt. After I read it, I got every book she ever wrote. Loved her style!
How do you approach cover design?
I usually try to visualize my characters and then find something appropriate. My first covers were architectural in nature because that's what the character's jobs were. I didn't use an actual person on my covers until Secrets of a Hart.
What are your five favorite books, and why?
The Stand (Stephen King) This book was long but so well written. I honestly don't know how he could write it and keep all the storylines straight but I loved it!
Gone With The Wind (Margaret Mitchell) I read this book in high school as part of project and I got lost in the story. Loved the complexity of the storyline and the characters!
Intensity (Dean Koonce) Dean Koonce writes like no other and that book had me literally freaking out the entire time I read it.
Lothaire (Kresley Cole) I loved this book for its witty style as well as it's exciting storyline. Love all of KC's books!
Hearts in Darkness (Laura Kaye) This book wasn't long but it was enough to get me to fall in love with everything Laura writes! I'm also blessed to call her my friend!
What do you read for pleasure?
Anything. I love all genres...romance, paranormal romance, mystery...all of it!
What is your e-reading device of choice?
I have a tablet so I use the Kindle and Nook apps.
