Interview with Brandi Janai

What is your writing process?
A lot goes on in my head before I write one word. I marinate, stew, watch the characters, ask questions, and get to know them until I can feel them. At that point I write.

I don't do an an outline in the beginning, about half-way through I'll start an outline and more focused character development. I wish I had a standard time of day set aside to write, I wish that I could write everyday but I don't. Not yet, anyway. I'm a writer in progress.
Do you remember the first story you ever wrote?
The first story I ever wrote was when I was in elementary school. It was about a little boy who's friend passed away. This little boy had to find a way to grieve and move forward. The story ended with the little boy getting his baseball mitt from under the bed, and running to the baseball to field to play - something he loved to do with his deceased friend.

I don't know why I wrote that story, or where it came from. As a child I didn't have anyone close to me die and death wasn't something that was talked about in the home.

But this is why I write. Stories come to me and I say yes to telling them.
