Interview with Byron A. Wells

What motivated you to become an indie author?
Considering how hard it is to get an agent, and then get published, being an indie author allows me to get my stories out there. Smashwords, CreateSpace, KDP have all helped reach this goal and enter markets I wouldn't have otherwise.
What do you read for pleasure?
Currently I am reading the Rapp Books by Vince Flynn and am enjoying them. I also read books on Photography, Lightroom, Photoshop and topics like that.
What are your five favorite books, and why?
I am not going to limit to a few books, but rather series...I like everything by J.R.R. Tolkien (SIlmarillion, Hobbit, Fellowship of the Ring, Two Towers and The Return of the King - he was just a master of literature with stories that spellbound you. Then there is Tom Clancy (Red Storm Rising, Hunt for Red October, Executive Orders, Sum of All Fears, Patriot Games, and the rest of the Ryan books - Clancy thoroughly researched his topics and wrote masterpieces that you just can't put down. The final would be Anne McCaffrey, primarily her Pern books (Dragon Flight, Dragon Quest, White Dragon, All the Weyrs of Pern, Dolphineers of Pern, and the rest of the series - she was able to create a unique blend of SciFi which I grew up reading.
What is your e-reading device of choice?
Where did you grow up, and how did this influence your writing?
I grow up travelling a bit. I have lived in the South Pacific, England, South America and all over the US. Since I write mainly in the SciFi and Dystopian realms there hasn't been much influence I would say. I did set a book in Toronto and the surrounding area of Ontario. It was fun doing research trips for content.
Describe your desk
Organize clutter, not messy, just things everything but neatly stacked. I know where everything is.
What is the greatest joy of writing for you?
Tell stories that swirl around in my head. The best times writing are when the characters take on a life of there own and start speaking through you as you type.
What do your fans mean to you?
They are the world. Their faith in me is evident (1) when they buy my book (2) when they leave reviews. Authors wouldn't be anyone without their fans.
What book marketing techniques have been most effective for you?
Honestly I have not found effective techniques...if you have any please send them my way.
How do you approach cover design?
I consider the story, then sketch out a conceptual design. Once I have what I like I either search stock picture sites, or create content of my own to create what I sketched.
Do you remember the first story you ever wrote?

This is the first book in the Valaran Chronicles. It is a SciFi set in a galaxy far, far away. I added a second book, plus 3 short stories to this world. I would love to see this series take off.
What are you working on next?
As I mentioned earlier: Singularity, and The Sephirah
What's the story behind your latest book?
Singularity is the current work in progress. This is a near future, dystopian book; however, I am not going to give away to much. Our main characters are a police detective and a rebel and what they uncover in the society in which they both live.

I am also working on a sequel to Primal Duality, continuing the story of Rick Branford.
How has Smashwords contributed to your success?
Smashwords gets my books onto iTunes, Barnes and Nobles and other markets.
