Interview with Clare Head

What is the greatest joy of writing for you?
Leaving behind the sensible me and unleashing the mischievous clown that I think lurks in all of us.
Where did you grow up, and how did this influence your writing?
I grew up in the Cotswolds in England. The very fact that my school was three miles away was the biggest influence on my writing as I had to walk most days and the 50 minute treck through muddy fields and country lanes gave me plenty of time to think. As any child does, I fantasized about living a life completely different to the one I was living, which ultimately lead to the stories I wrote.
What do your fans mean to you?
They give me a great sense of comraderie. They are people who share the same sense of fun and who don't take EVERY aspect of life too seriously
When you're not writing, how do you spend your time?
Family time... chores... real life! And work... I work for a TV Sports channel. I won't bore you with details, but I'm one of those people sitting in a dark control room in front of a wall of TV screens, talking into the presenters ear. I'm the one you hear shouting 10, 9, 8, 7 etc.
One of the shows I work on is an irreverent nightly sports show where FUNNY is the name of the game. I love it.
How do you approach cover design?
I'm glad you asked about my cover design because ... I love my book cover! There I've said it! I work with a graphic artist in my normal job and he did the cover for me. I wanted the glamour of a comic book character, plus I wanted color. Basically, I wanted a face and a phone and we came up with that. I was pretty insistent that I didn't want the cover to look generic. I don't want to follow the pack. I feel that my book contains a stand-out story on the inside, so I wanted a stand-out cover on the outside. Thank you Peter Heckman for the design. You are a talent.
What's the story behind your latest book?
'All by my Selfie,' started with a small nugget of a story. I heard about a woman who had to be evacuated from her house because she bought a plant that contained a black widow spider. To me, that was a great start for a story. You could be a young woman, disillusioned with the life you are leading and suddenly being told to move out of your house for a few days. Who could you meet? How could this, supposedly small incident change your life?
I realised I could have a lot of fun with the characters I created.
When did you first start writing?
I started writing novels and plays when my children were small. I was dog tired and if I ever picked up a book, I fell asleep within minutes of reading! I was looking for a book that captured me with a long story, but also entertained me in short bursts. (Basically, I didn't want to have to read through pages and pages of description to get to the story - I wasn't at that stage of life) When I couldn't find anything that fitted the bill, I decided to start writing for myself. I was soon gripped. I love writing
What are you working on next?
A sequel to All By My Selfie. More drama! More comedy... There is plenty more fun to be had from the original set of characters.

I'm also working on a time travel adventure, with a different set of characters, loosely connected to Evie's world. I'm very excited about it as it's another great story that I think my readers will enjoy. It's funny, the characters are flawed and their reason for going back in time is not conventional!
How has Smashwords contributed to your success?
I love the American-ess of Smashwords. I lived in America for two years and loved the people. Americans know about entertainment. I think that's why my book is doing well there. They don't judge a book on the amount of misery and angst it contains. They judge it on the quality of the story. Americans are not afraid to enjoy a happy story! I salute you!
