Interview with Thomas Cannon

What's the story behind your latest book?
The Tao of Apathy began with my observation of class warfare that goes on in institutions where there is a mix of employees. I found the interaction between these classes to cause humorous situations. I also found a treasure chest of humor in the way management dealt with employees. People definitely rise to their level of incompetence.

In my book, the employees come together the best they can to fight off the bad decisions that take place during a reorganization
Describe your desk
My desk is anywhere I can find to write. At this moment, I am at the dining room table. I need it quiet, except for some music playing (or not). I find my comfort in the schedule of writing and not the place so much.
Where did you grow up, and how did this influence your writing?
I grew up on a small farm in central Wisconsin. Wisconsin has a great influence on me and I like to write about small town life, bars, and working class jobs. As I get older I am writing more about farm life. It was an idyllic time for me where I got to work hard, wander around the countryside, and have the support of a big family.
What book marketing techniques have been most effective for you?
I am on twitter, facebook, Google+, and Goodreads. I think writers need a presence on social media. However, getting out and meeting people is much more important. I rarely click on a link to buy a book on social media. There is just too much promotion on them.
When did you first start writing?
I first began writing in high school. I had a good imagination growing up and I took a creative writing class. In that class i used my creativity to try to impress a girl. She liked my writing. Me? Not so much.
What motivated you to become an indie author?
I have a good novel. I believe in it and its humor. However, I have found few publishers looking for a humorous novel. Publishing is in such a state of flux, there is little risk taken on unique books. It was simply time.
