Interview with Carl Hackman

What do your fans mean to you?
Everything, without them it would be harder to continue to write. I listen to their suggestions and welcome their thoughts on my writing. I hope that in return I can build worlds for them to explore and characters they will enjoy reading about, whether good or bad.
What are you working on next?
I am currently writing my fourth novel which is set in medieval England and follows the story of an Anglo Saxon boy as he moves into manhood.
Who are your favorite authors?
Too many to list, but I really enjoy reading books by Tolkien, Terry Pratchett, Brandon Sanderson, Andrew Buckley, Ben Kane, Angus Donald and Giles Kristian, to name a few.
What inspires you to get out of bed each day?
Where I am going to take my current character next. For me writing is as much fun as reading. I can fall into a different world and explore it. Hours can go by without me ever needing to think about normal day to day life, and for me, that is why I'm addicted to my chosen profession, The best part about it is that I get to share it with my readers.
When you're not writing, how do you spend your time?
Usually painting. I'm becoming addicted to digital painting and have some of my work on Fine Art America.
How do you discover the ebooks you read?
Most of the ebooks I read come from either friends who are authors or from recommendations by my own readers and from newsletters.
What is your writing process?
I am a typical pantser. I let my characters drive the story. Usually I have an idea in my head of where I want each story to go, but I am always surprised when my character decides to do something different and exciting.
How do you approach cover design?
I try to capture the mood of the book or character. Sometimes it is a portrait of a character, sometimes it is one or more scenes from the novel.
