Interview with C. Chase Harwood

What are your five favorite books, and why?
Watership Down - Richard Adams - A fantastical window into the human condition as portrayed by another species. The stakes are so very high for these rabbits.

Westward Ho - Charles Kingsley - A rollicking adventure, despicable characters and attitudes, wonderful heroes. A fantastic trip to Elizabethan Times and the struggle between England and Spain in the New World.

Catcher In The Rye - JD Salinger - The cutting edge that showed us all how to tell a story using modern writing techniques. Salinger also showed me how to embrace the gray versus the black and white.

A Soldier Of The Great War - Mark Helprin - An epic, complicated piece of beautiful art. As much a book about aesthetics as it is about stories. Helprin conjures images, scenes and characters in a way that sets him apart from all but the very best in the craft of prose.

Wool - Hugh Howey - Besides being an original tale, Wool's descriptive narrative is hard to beat. Howey is also the most influential person in the publishing world who helped guide me and give me faith in independent publishing.
Do you remember the first story you ever read, and the impact it had on you?
Watershed Down was the first novel to really have a impact on me from a fantastical point of view. Richard Adams uses the type of story telling foundation that I find myself attracted to: a high stakes situation with a deep look at the human condition; ethics, morals, politics, spirituality, love and hate. Adam's characters are deeply explored and just like in real life, happenstance, luck, and twists of fate make for unpredictable results.
What's the story behind your latest book?
I'm battling back and forth between two series:

HOSTILE INTENT is the 3rd and final installment of the Of Sudden Origin series. The story picks up roughly a year after the events that took place in the second series, Children Of Fiends.

BASTION SATURN is set at the end of the 21st Century. A singularity has occurred on Earth where the bulk of humanity has allowed itself to meld with Artificial Intelligence. Saturn and its 60+ moons has become the new frontier and is a last bastion for the libertarian minority who have fled Earth to remain free. Of course the new frontiersmen bring all the unpleasantries of human nature with them. The story centers around a group of refugees who find themselves forming a space gang to stay alive. Additionally, the Singularity on Earth has no interest in un-connected humans remaining in the Solar System. Steps are taken to rectify that. Fast paced and fraught with insanely difficult circumstances, the series promises to be gobbled up.

Both are due to start coming out Mid-2015
What is the greatest joy of writing for you?
It's an extraordinary thing to have a story pour forth from one's head. Like that perfect "ping" of a golf swing, when the tale is flowing it feels almost effortless.
What do your fans mean to you?
Fan's are nearly everything. Fan's are like the family that I work so hard to take care of and to please.
What is your e-reading device of choice?
I loves me iPad mini. (And I really love that when I'm on the go, I can pick up right where I left off with my iPhone).
