Interview with C.C. Naughton
Published 2018-03-03.
Do you remember the first story you ever read, and the impact it had on you?
I don't remember the first story, but the earliest book I remember reading was a large, illustrated book of fairy tales (I still have it!). The stories were greatly condensed, but retained the important elements. I am sure it was a huge inspiration for my love of fairy tales in particular, and fantasy stories in general.
Who are your favorite authors?
Dr. Seuss, Roald Dahl, Astrid Lindgren, Madeleine L'Engle, Lemony Snicket, Anne McCaffrey, Lois Lowry, Jane Yolen, Diane Duane, Diana Wynne Jones, Gail Carson Levine.
What is your e-reading device of choice?
I currently have a Kindle Fire, because I also like using it for games. :)
How do you approach cover design?
I am fortunate to have a friend who is an amazing artist! She draws my covers for my Twinkle Dingle fairy series. Sometimes I have a specific idea for how I want something to look, but she also reads my books so she usually has a good grasp of which elements to include.
My Beneath the Birch Tree saga covers are all a photo relevant to the story surrounded by birch bark. I am going more for consistency there.
What are you working on next?
So Many Things.
1. Bud's Blog! If you liked him in Don't Piss Off The Fairies, you'll love reading his blog. budmushroom.com. It's ongoing.
2. Three books in the Twinkle Dingle series - a prequel, the next book in the main series, and a Bud Mushroom Adventure.
3. The next two books in the Beneath the Birch Tree saga.
When you're not writing, how do you spend your time?
I sew when I can--I like to make weird plush toys. I am a bit obsessed with Stardew Valley at the moment, so that takes a lot of my free time. I also like to read, I have over 800 e-books on my Kindle.
Do you remember the first story you ever wrote?
I actually have a copy of it still (I dictated, but I have the original index card it was written on). You can read it here: https://ccnaughtonblog.wordpress.com/2017/01/24/happy-animal-land/
