Interview with Cynthia Down

What is the greatest joy of writing for you?
I have a sketchy past and have been through a lot of "life" (i.e. self-inflicted pain through bad decisions). Thankfully I was rescued from that life. As a Christian, for years I questioned what my spiritual gifts are and how to be used by God. During this time of waiting, I developed a deep passion for studying the Word of God and have been truly transformed by it. It has literally changed me from the inside out. Recently it's become very obvious that God wants to use this passion and my gift for writing to inspire others. It is so fulfilling!
What are you working on next?
Everyday Wisdom For Life is my first book in a series which was just published. Currently I am working on Everyday Wisdom For Leaders and the next books are Everyday Wisdom For The Broken and Everyday Wisdom For Spiritual Warfare. All from the book of Proverbs.
What inspires you to get out of bed each day?
Well, I have a "real Job" that I love but requires the use of an alarm clock. I've worked in business within corporate America for 20+ years and have been blessed to be in leadership for the past 10 years. I am also a spaz. I worked full-time and went to school full-time to acquire my BA/BS in Business in 2012 and now am writing books! Between my beautiful family, my job and my passion (writing)... sleep isn't really a high priority.
Do you remember the first story you ever wrote?
"Kitten Dance" in kindergarten.
What is your writing process?
First pray that God will speak His truth through my writing and it would be His treasure. I then read the chapter in Proverbs, create an outline of the verses to highlight for that corresponding chapter in my book (by hand with a notebook and pen). When I've gone through all 31 books of Proverbs I pray again and start typing, revising, revising, revising, editing and revising. Prayer throughout the process.
Do you remember the first story you ever read, and the impact it had on you?
"Kitten Dance" in kindergarten - I was very proud and glowing.
How do you approach cover design?
My wonderful, amazing and talented husband created the cover design for all my books. It is an old door with a Cross and each book in the series is the same door with a different color. It's beautiful and perfect.
What is your e-reading device of choice?
I currently have a Kindle Fire
How do you discover the ebooks you read?
Through Smashwords, Amazon and Book Bub.
What do you read for pleasure?
Fiction for escapism and especially love crime novels, political intrigue and Christian fiction. When I'm doing research for writing I read a lot of Bible knowledge based books which I always find so enriching and transforming as I dig deeper into the Word.
How has Smashwords contributed to your success?
Smashwords is one of the best resources for indie authors. Mark Coker has written several books that have been absolutely invaluable in trying to understand the whole indie ebook world. Highly recommend every one of them. Also, Smashwords makes it super easy to publish my book with tons of tools for authors that I'm still exploring! This interview function is just one of many.
