Interview with Jessica Werner

What are you working on next?
I just released my first Novel Sra'kalor, which is the first part of the Ashwood Falls triology. I am itching to begin the second part very soon. I have many ideas floating in my mind for the two following parts that will hopefully capture the readers and leave them want more.
There seem to be some scenes that are not picked up upon, will we hear about them again?
Absolutely! It was intentional to leave a few things open, to come back to them in the second and third book. So keep tuned to find out the connection to the big picture.
Do you remember the first story you ever wrote?
Yes, I do. I was a teenager and wrote a short story about a young man hearing a music box in his dreams and had no idea where it came from. Until one day he heard the melody in the middle of the street, followed it and found a girl, dancing to it. He fell in love with her right there, though when she noticed him, she thought him to be a creep. The rest of the story consisted of them going through tensions, fights until they finally ended up together. Apparently I did like that kind of story back then already.
When you're not writing, how do you spend your time?
I do spend more of my time writing in any way. Be it for my book or good old fashioned Multi-author roleplaying games. Apart from that I spend it with some creative activities, like graphics in Photoshop or Poser, with reading one of the many many unread books I have in my shelves and on my Kindle, watch TV-Series all across the board or spend time with the love of my life.
What is your e-reading device of choice?
I have a internet-less Kindle that I love reading my e-books on. I do not use my PC for reading, since it is really hard to snuggle into bed with that ;)
Describe your desk
Chaos is pretty much the word that works. But chaos also keeps me creative, so it's a very very VERY creative desk.
What is your writing process?
First there is an idea, that I am trying to develop in my mind, writing it down as a mindmap to connect the dots. Afterwards I am writing a Scenelist, to decide what part of the story will be written in which chapter. And then I'll just get to write. I do not write in a certain order or very carefully. I simply write what is in my mind and after I have the story complete I begin editing and go through the whole story several times to improve it, delete things, add things and so on. The very last round of editing is dedicated to grammar and spelling and is done by the love of my life, Michael, because I get blind to my own errors after reading the story so many times. Without him, I'd be lost.
How do you approach cover design?
I make my covers myself. Once I get a feel for the story I sketch up several ideas and then choose the one that speaks to me most. I do work in poser and photoshop until I'm happy with everything.
